Had a Maori colleague at work for many years. He had a subtle accent and for years I had no idea he was Maori. He later accepted the President position at the largest Maori university in New Zealand and went back home. This was after many years as a geneticist and journal editor at our organization. I can only surmise that tobacco pipes were a British import, and that the Maori then designed their own pipes from the British model. I only say that because I don't think that tobacco was a native plant, nor was smoking done before colonization. But correct me if I'm wrong about it.

Interesting pipe, perhaps a British pipe, English Pride comes to mind, introduced by colonials and had the bowl carved by a native?
