All communities are bell curve samples.
I mostly turn to YouTube for information, not necessarily entertainment, more of a way of learning via other peoples experiences with whatever I’m looking into-be it a mechanical issue, a specific product I have questions about only answered by related firsthand experience, techniques to solve a problem I’m facing, etc.
I abhor the regurgitation of information picked up by the self called experts that makes up most of their “expertise” that I find all too rampant. These days, anyone with a Wi-Fi connection and a cell phone can become an “influencer” on anything and I do not feel we are always better for it.
Having picked up smoking a pipe as a happenstance adjunct to being a nicotine addict late in life and deep into the “Information Age”, of course I have YouTubed pipe stuff. I care about learning restoration techniques, early on I did glean a lot of direction on the mechanics of smoking a pipe, storing tobacco, etc.
I have found that like any other community there’s a few great positive examples, a few horrid examples and a whole lot of everything else in between.
Sorting them out is a laborious task I’m rarely interested in tackling, and I don’t suffer pretentious BS easily.
I am grateful for the availability of good info, and the ability to learn through the mistakes and triumphs of others for sure. I’m likewise grateful to have been involved in online forums (for other interests) since Al Gore invented the internet, for I’ve developed a good knack for quickly sorting out those that speak from “been there/done that” experience from the “regurgitation hordes” heavily armed with the opinions of others yet light on personal perspective and insight.
As always, YMMV.
