Maryland also has a law where residents are required to report any purchases made via the internet and submit with your tax return. Our Comptroller, who is actually a pretty good guy says they have no way of enforcing that so it is another silly bit of Maryland legislation. When Maryland inadvertently made it illegal to ship pipe tobacco into the state, he also stated that would not be enforced and revoked the following year (which he did).

Yeah, Wildcat, I hear ya'. It's just too much.

They say it it won't be enforced, but I bet it will when they want to charge someone with more. Like "Oh yeah, well you did this too." Or, when we catch up to California as a state nearing bankruptcy. The money has to come from somewhere.

Al, I'm glad MD saw the error of their ways. Their phones musta' been ringing off the walls in their inadvertencey. I'd have revoked the law too. What a hornets nest that probably was.
Okay, I'm done being a Debbie Downer.

Thanks for the heads up! I have a brother that lives near DuBois. I'll have to make a trip to visit him :)

I'm moving to NYS soon and the tobacco taxes are depressing. I would love to support a local B&M but I can't afford to pay that much for tobacco. Looks like internet vendors only in my future.

I still plan on visiting the local B&M to get supplies and maybe the occasional tin, but here in NM with fairly low tax I buy everything at the local B&M and have yet to place an online order.

According to Mitt Romney you should never pay taxes if you may get out of it. Order on the internet from an out of state dealer. That will work for now. A new strategy may be needed next year when they pass the internet sales tax bill.

Does anyone know what the tobacco tax is in Colorado? I am considering a move. Just answered my own question with Google's help. It is 42%.

Foggy, aren't you a native NY'er? That sounds like a major life change. What gives? Looking for fresh air and mountains or something else? (hope you don't mind the nosey question!)

I can see it now - he would have to move to Colorado with two moving trucks, one to carry his furniture and the other for his dunhills and tobacco. AFter growing to love the music of John Denver, he would embrace the Rocky Mountain Lifestyle and become a wandering troubadour.

WAIT ... Foggy, are you choosing Colorado because you want to try a different bud in your pipe other than ODF or Three Oaks Syrian?

I feel for you ! Washington state is not far behind in the tax arena.
I retire in 4 more years, and NY is not on my "possibities" list! So far, it's Wyoming, Montana, S. Dakota, and Texas. Problem is my wife is terrified of snakes. Belize is another consideration, but it's far from family.
When will they learn that states make more money if they lower taxes????

You are right, it is improbable, Al. But still possible. I am having trouble getting up to my place, a 4th floor walkup, want more space, and believe that Colorado is a good choice. Also I believe that NYC will be under water before too many more years, and the taxes and costs here are brutal. Not to mention a state legislature which may have the most indicted criminals of any group except organized crime. In fact it usually seems to be part of organized crime. If Six can move to Vermont, I can move to Colorado. No decision will be made for a while.

I would prefer not to be on the east coast. I don't think the coasts will be stable in the coming years, and most coastal cities will be submerged. I may or may not be here to see it, but if making a move it should be to higher ground.
