New to pipesmoking; no taste

I've smoked Stanwell Melange and found it to be pretty low on taste, so it's not you.
Try a non-aromatic tobacco. Several good ones have been listed already.

@aussielass- You want Nic smoke SG blends like 1792 or Bracken flake (if you like lakelands) they will knock you down with the Nic~kick...Also if you don't like lakelands smoke some Peterson UF or Irish Flake, perhaps some of GL's G. L. Pease JackKnife...also burley blends should pack some nice Nic-kick (if you like them I would suggest Solani's Aged Burley flake...outstanding burley...but you have to try diff blends, some super-nic kick for some and none for others...I smoke 1792 on empty stomach before bfast w/cup-o-mud and it does a Dragon good ::

Sip some smoke into your mouth then inhale some air in through your nose. Then let the the smoke trickle out of your mouth. You should taste something. It takes a bit of time but you will get it. You might want to move to a non aromatic blend with a little more fullness. I always recommend Dunhill Early Morning Pipe as a mild introduction to non aromatic styles. I've been smoking for years and i still like EMP. Keep at it and welcome to the forum. ::

If you have been a cigar smoker, the taste is sure different. I had the same experience when I first started. Pipe tobacco does not taste the way it smells in the tin or room note. Latikia and Perique blends woke my pipe smoking taste buds up. Now I can enjoy the stronger blends, as well as appreciate the subtle blends. It will come. It's a great pastime. Stick with it!

I have no sence of smell at all.I get certain tastes from different tobaccos,but as far as aroma,it's up to the wife.God bless her,she loves the smell of a "good pipe or cigar".

I've smoked pipe for a few years and still haven't been able to totally replace cigs. It is also a psychological thing. I can happily smoke pipes for a whole day when I have cigs at home - but if I am out of them the craving gets really bad.
As for taste - it takes a long time to develop the ability to taste pipe tobacco but it will eventually come.

I guess that really depends on where you are coming from. I never smoked cigs,and had no trouble tasting pipe tobacco right away. It's all about the palate for me. ::

LOL at Spartan! Try a complex English like H&H Magnum Opus and smoke slow. Do a few French inhales to get the smoke circulating aound. You can also do this with CAO Cherry Bomb and it will feel like the Kool-Aid man punched you in the face!

I would say, you're not doing ANYTHING wrong. It took me a bit of time before I developed a real taste for pipe tobacco. Almost makes you EARN it's love.

sry to hear ur havin trouble gittin the nic kick out of ur pipe, I can relate cause i been smokin pipe for over 15 yrs bout only bout a yr ago i completely threw away the cigs.dont give up the pipe cause its one of the most relaxin wonderful experiences in life. Now that said, and understand i dont need it anymore, but to help me make the transition, for a while i mixed some reg baccy, (drum cig baccy) with some bowls for that extra kick once in awhile. sometimes i added a drop of menthol, or vanila etc for flavouring. any way its just a thought and u may like it.

Thanks for the encouragement nsfisher. I would never have thought of adding normal RYO baccy to pipe tobacco and nor would I have every imagined that it had more nic in it. Smiles ruefully, the thought of spending $30 on Drum makes my eyes water well and truly but I may just give that a go.
I would never have thought of adding a drop or two of 'nilla essence either - that's something I'll definitely do on the morrow. I'm building up quite a stack of baccy .... don't know anything about them, what I'll like & what I won't, but it'll sure give me some bargaining power to do some trades here with a couple of contacts I've made, one being a purveyor of just normal cigs and a select few McClellands blends that I've liked the best so far.

i have sort of the same problem, every now and then i can't taste pipe tobacco but i can taste all my food and drink. sometimes it lasts for a full week and i don't seem to have sinus problems. so its a mystery to me.

For me i smoke cigerettes and my pipes i usually have two bowls a day but for me there are two different experiences cigerettes for the nicotine but my pipe it a relaxing time for me watching tv or reading.Different pipes with different tobbaccos always of course.Are different tastes depending on briar pear cherry woods.So with the different tobbaccos wood ect i always get a different taste.Would i give up my cigs or pipe no i enjoy both to much.Adding vanilla esscence sounds interesting i must try this.
