Newbie here... I bought my first pipe, Missouri Meeschaum Country Gentleman, yesterday. Man, it was a hell of a time even finding one. The good pipe tobacco place in the area closed down and ended up finding one in a discount liquor store of all places.
I did a little research and ask a couple of buddies what they liked and ordered a couple flavors off of pipesandcigars.com. I'm really looking forward to their arrival. In the meantime, I lit the pipe up for the first time tonight with some Captain Black, which is really all I could find locally, and poured a Leinies Creamy Dark. The Captain Black will do for now but once the better stuff gets here I will probably toss it. It just reminds me of an inexpensive cigar. Since I will only be enjoying one a night, its all about quality and not quantity.
I was never really much of a smoker, just the occasional cigar. As of late, I've been looking for something to help unwind. My stress level is at an all time high. What could be better then sitting on the porch with the dog after work and enjoying a good pipe and a tasty beer!? Now if Winter would only leave so sitting on the porch is enjoyable
I'm looking forward to the journey. I can already see a pipe collection will be in my future.
Cheers! :puffy:

Welcome to the forum mate, I'm glad you realise that pipe smoking is more a hobby than just simple smoking a few bowls here and there, I started out similar to you and now have 40+ pipes and 20-30 tobacco blends. If you like aromatic tobacco's, be sure to try Sutliff Private Stock - Mountain Pass and Loire Valley as well as Missouri Meerchaum - Great Dane. They are 3 very nice tobacco's for the Aro and non-Aro smoker alike.

Welcome lunchie. What did you order for baccy? I'm curious to see your first choices. Captain Black was amongst the first of my pipe tobaccos too. I found the brethren here and have had a blast trying new blends and acquiring different pipes.

I've been at it less than a year but I think I've made the commitment.

Enjoy your pipes and tobaccos!

Mike

Welcome to the hobby, and the forum. If you happen to enjoy that Captain Black, you should try Lane Limited's 1Q blend. It's Captain Black x 100!

Enjoy the journey.

Newbroom, I ordered CAO Bella Vanilla which is a name I recognized more then anything and a buddy of mine says he likes. It claims to be mild in flavor which I think will be a good thing to start off with. I also, ordered 4th Generation 1982 which is suppose to be another vanilla flavored but with Black Berry also. It sounds interesting and it seems like the 4th Generation stuff is highly thought of online. Finally, I wanted something more rummy so I got Sutliff Private Reserves Barbados Plantation. Another buddy of mine said he likes Sutliff stuff so I figured it would be a good one to try.
As for the Captain Black, I can't say I hated it by any means. Its just if I have a choice, I think a wood tipped Black and Mild would be a better choice, for me, for an inexpensive smoke. But you never know until you try it, right! I will give it a few more tries to see if my opinion changes. It seems like everyone says give pipe tobacco a few bowls before you make your final judgement. I imagine it will be a few days until my shipment arrives anyway.
mcitinner1, ty, I am up for all the help I can get and will probably take you up on the offer at some point. It is pretty intimidating trying to figure out to get. Luckily it seems that even the more expensive choices are still budget friendly. Which is nice, I can use an inexpensive hobby for once
Thanks everyone else for the suggestions so far. I will look into them for sure.

I wasn't all that enamored of CB, but it was what they had when I started with my cob, after I'd tried to use my RYO cig tobacco for a week or so.

Now I'm off into otc burley, VaBurs, VaPas, Balkans, Latakia, and several mellow cavendish aros, mostly vanila and sweet nutty kinda flavors in those.

Welcome to the forum lunchie...I read more on there than I post, but your pipe journey started similar to mine. A simple pipe and some Captain Black!
I also found the Captain Black to be a okay, but needed something to help. I've mixed a couple of bowls with Carter Hall so far. I am also waiting for this damn artic air to return from whence it came! Lots of helpful information here, enjoy your pipe journey!
Chris.

Welcome! I've enjoyed many "cheap" cigars and less expensive pipe tobaccos.... they have so few pretensions

to live up to!

Good Luck and enjoy your journey!

Welcome Lunchie! I'm a newbie myself. I've been a cigar guy for years and picked up a pipe a few months ago. That purchase opened up a world that I had no idea existed. I enjoy my cob and old Savenelli so much that I rarely pick up a cigar these days. I hung around for a few months before joining just reading and learning about different tobaccos and pipes. Because of this forum I have a drawer full of different tobaccos and a passion for finding and restoring old pipes!! This is a great place to hangout and learn,, enjoy your time here and good luck with the new hobby!!

Welcome! I hope you are enjoying yourself. After admiring pipe smoking from afar for many years I picked up the hobby for very similar reasons. Since then I have benefited so much from embracing tobacco. While the stress stimulus has not improved in the slightest, my stress levels are much reduced and resilience is in far better shape than it has been for a long time. I hope you find similar results. I am truly excited for you.

I picked up 1 oz of black regular and tried a couple times, in different pipes and just don't care for it. It's not bad, just don't get anything from it. The more you read on here, the more you'll hear and try and find things you like to make a regular rotation.
