As far as the tongue bite goes that could be smoking too fast or the tobacco being too moist.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Beside the classical reasons for tongue bite, I think it was aggravated because in the beginning I was smoking the pipe just like a cigarette - holding it between lips right in the middle of the mouth (like LVC in my avatar) - so the tongue got full and direct exposure to smoke. Now I vary with each draw the position of the pipe - from the left corner to the right corner of the mouth.
