Hello,

I wanted to ask a few question I cant get answer at the store near me. One what will be a good pipe to get. Have one but its was cheap and no name on it, so not sure if its good or what. Two the tobacco my store sells have no flavor just burn ashes taste. Like to know good aromatic (if that's the right term for flavor ones) brands. Other I cant figure out is how often do you clean your pipe. I watch youtube videos and I get like everytime you smoke a bowl, to every fourth fifth smoke you do it.

I can +1 on the Carter Hall, just smoked my first bowl of it last night and it was really good. I'm pretty new too, the amount of information pertaining to pipe smoking can be really overwhelming to us new guys. I recommend watching these guys videos:

They are super informative and cover many topics including reasons for your tobacco tasting like ash. Hope you find them useful.

Starting with an OTC like Carter Hall is fine, because there's nowhere to go from there but up. (Well, Mixture 79 and all Lakelands would be down, but really down, like stepping into the hole leading to hell). Just remember that if you find CH and SWR and PA and all those codger OTCs awful, don't give up pipesmoking quite yet. Just get yourself a decent blend.

It was a long time before I found something I liked better than Carter Hall.

In fact I'm not sure I have yet...
I agree to go with the MM cob, great place to start.

Ive been smoking Carter Hall exclusively I started 4 years ago. I smoke usually 4 or 5 bowls a day since. It's hard for me to break away from it. If you smoke slowly it's delicious, too fast and it gets bland. It was great as a starter pipe tobacco because it stays lit and is easy to maintain.

In your first few months a lot of flavors will change as you become accustomed to the taste of smoke.

It's like switching to a diet of spicy food, the first plate is nothing but spice, but your mouth adapts and after a while you can taste the nuance. If all you can taste is smoke right now it's perfectly normal and there isn't much that can be done about it.

Concentrate on enjoying the ritual of lighting and puffing at a slow tempo, the flavor will come later.

Carter hall isn't bad for an orc tobacco. Try some mcclelland blends. You'll like them,I'm sure.also, sipping is the same as puffing, only slower. Best of luck from a 45 year noob. Jeb
