never bought the box, but have had quite a bit of plume on the tinned SJF. Wonderful stuff

Hmmm ... when I hear "tobacco bloom" referenced, I initially think of those pink and white flowers that emerge from the bud of a maturing tobacco plant.
I've heard "plume" and "bloom" used with implicit interchangeability for decades in both cigar and pipe discussions. Though I have no horses in this particular race, my time-ravaged brain gravitates towards aligning with the description of material formations from crystalline nucleation as "plume." (Merriam-Webster does include "a delicate powdery coating on some fruits and leaves" in its definition of "bloom.") Parallel evolution occurs in language, folks.
I've got a big jar of MacBaren Club Blend covered with the stuff. :puffy:

From the glossary of pipedia. I was just curious.
Edit: I cut and pasted a pic of the definition which does not appear to be showing up but they use the words interchangeably.

Plume or bloom, either way, I just opened my first tin of St. James Flake that just arrived in the mail yesterday and there is the wonderful stuff on several of the flakes. Well I say wonderful because I have never had the privilege of smoking and tobacco that has plume.Currently drying two of the flakes and looking forward to seeing what this flake has to offer.

I jarred two boxes of St. James Flake this week...no plume. Or bloom. But no room for gloom and doom, I'll be enjoying it soon.

Jndyer, if you find you like St. James Flake then you might want to give the plug version a go. Much more depth of flavour and of course much slower burning. I can fill a particular pipe with the flake version and get 45 minutes from it whereas the same pipe filled with the plug version lasts well over an hour!
St. James in either of its incarnations is a delicious smoke :puffy:

Jay.
