Greetings from Ohio. My recommendation is to read here and get a sense of what blends many people seem to enjoy, and buy a few 2 oz (or 50 g) tins. You can sort lists of pipe tobaccos on pipe tobacco vendor websites to see their best sellers. Restrain yourself, if possible, from obtaining 20 different tins at first. As a cigar smoker, you are no stranger to tobacco. You'll probably pick up on what you like and what you don't much faster than someone who has never smoked a pipe or cigar before.

As for packing, there are some recent threads on that topic. Packing pipe tobacco is not like with the devils lettuce.
