I think they're really good looking, but I worry about heat retention
+1
I see roth you don't think it's an issue - and that's good to hear. I could see it even helping your hands stay a bit cooler. All in all, not sure if I'd buy one, but I think they're sharp looking and I can see these being popular.
Seems like a smart marketing move on Savinelli's part.

I never thought by posting a picture that these pipes are so polarizing. It's good to see everyone else's tastes though. Let's just see what the price point of these are and whether they will go through their entire pipe line-up with the leather treatment or not.

As some of you may now know, I live in Milano. I've seen those in the Savinelli's shop last week.
I think they are absolutely beautiful to see, and also very nice when you touch them but...I'm not sure I would smoke them...I think they would be very nice for collection but...to be smoked I don't know...

Leather is very thick by the way, and the sewings very very strong. The box, with the pipe is a real beauty to see....but the price...wow....more than 500 eur..... They told me they made very few, probably 50 or so.

Wow is right - thanks for sharing that. Nice to have a member from Milano!
However, once again, probably a smart marketing move on their part. I think the usual assumption is that leather is used on poor quality briar when in fact the only issue may be cosmetic.
By pricing them high, they are in a sense creating a new category and I'll bet they sell out of them easily.

As for the briar quality I tried to watch closely the rim...beuatiful bird's eye...natural finishing, I don't think they risk to put "bad" briar on those high price pipes.

Of course on the other hand I don't think they have used their best too. The best goes for the autographs (from 400 eur up to more than 1000eur in the shop). And then Giubileo d'oro e Punto oro.
I would say that, judging only from the rim, that it is a nice briar with some defects, like in Virginia or Professor line, very nice but with some little black points here and there, carefully hidden from the leather.
oh...the Christmas pipe for 2013 (50 pieces only) is on the same price league, but that one is a real beauty. I'm sorry I couldn't take pics. here it is :Click

They had the n.2/50 and I was really tempted...

I think they are totally cool looking, way nicer than the old brown leather pipes. I like the one with the Blue leather best. It would go perfect with my yellow Munper lambskin leather jacket with the blue lapels. I would be totally accessorized with that pipe. I would think about paying 250.00 but not a dime more.

I am with you Harris... 500 euros seems way over priced. No matter how nice the briar is it's still hidden!!

500 Euros equates to about $750.00 CAN/US. These are EXPENSIVE regardless of the quality of briar and leather. As much as I like them, at that price point, I see no Savinelli SLP pipes in my near future.

Sav unfinished pipes are usually seconds with a few fills, but when you smoke them for two or three

months they begin to acquire a golden honey brown finish that only improves with the years
I have an Author unfinished and it is one of my best smokers!

What, no zebra skin!?
Seriously, I like these about as much as I like polyester bell-bottoms, gas lines and Fat Elvis. For some reason, I can't help but think of bad stuff from the 70s. I can almost see the attraction for Red Sox fans, but this is like the Bill Buckner of pipes!

As I said before, I do like the looks of them. As for quality, Savs are unbeatable for the money, but that kind of price is quite high just for some leather work!

If they made one with a green stem and yellow stitching, I'd probably pay around $150, but not much more.

Green/yellow = Go Packers!
BTW 4dot, those Sav wallets are very nice!

@ Shutterbug:
No. What I was inferring was that we all know that Savinelli has excellent QC, it's the leather that you are buying...

Since Savinelli has their standard shaping lists, it is essentially a leather clad model with the highlight being the leather.
Ah, my bad. I misunderstood your point. This has been my experience as well.
Also, a good point about the "Frankenstein seam", it's more of an embellishment then a small detail. I've had a couple of leather clad Savinelli Grand Prix that i liked. I think the coats were made fro two pieces, instead of many.
