Saw this on the Bay which ended yesterday and was blown away by the final bid.

Yep, saw that one, too. Amazing auction. Rob Cooper's salesmanship and writing talent probably account for a good portion of that price (IMHO).
The pipe has a lovely blast, though.

That is some very weird bidding. it went from 1115.00 to 2444.99 in one bid, makes no sense. It is the last of two from the RD Filed collection that is unsmoked and it does have a great blast, but the final number is way too high. All of the other unsmoked RD Fields went for under 700.00 I believe. I have been watching these Ashtons since they became available and this one does not jive with any of the others.

I know there were 213 pipes to be sold in total. Perhaps that might have been the last one. If it is not the last of the collection, it will be interesting to see the final price of that pipe.

I've got eight Ashtons. Two from the mid 1980s from the RD Fields collection I bought last year from Coopersark. This one at $2500 is the most I've ever seen for an early Ashton. Wow. Sounds like a bidding war got outta hand. Deep pockets.

I've got about 30 Ashton's in my accumulation of pipes. I guess I'll hold on to some of the early 1980's era pipes. They are definitely my favorite British pipe.

roth, I am shocked at this price because none of the others came within a third of this one. I believe I have looked at everyone that coppersark sold and there were others that had great blasts like this and that were also un smoked like this but my memory is pretty good and I do not remember any of them going for more than the 680 or so price range. Of course if you have the money and you want something then price is irrelevant but this one raises eyebrows, especially since it does not follow the usual bidding war scenario. It looks as if someone had info of what a certain bidder had for his top bid and then someone bid him up to it in one shot. I have seen many auctions and do not remember one like this. I would not be surprised if this pipe gets re listed.

Harris, I am pretty sure I bid one up to $800 and lost. But yeah, this seems high. I did bid on this one too, but wasn't even remotely in the running by the time the bell rang.

Wow, that is staggering. I don't think any of the other pipes sold previously were unsmoked? I'm a huge Ashton fan but that is an insane amount.

Micheal Lindner recently sold this 1983 Ashton 120 shape (one of 31) for a mere $679, but it was smoked. In contrast someone got a nice deal on a first year Ashton.
