G'Evening Gentleman. I recently acquired this Michael Kabik CHP x freehand which will need a good cleaning. As seen in the first image the stem in unrepairable and will need replacing. I'd like suggestions as to what type of stem might look the best design wise. Maybe opting for a Lucite in a cream/white swirl pattern, pearl gold, light green? I'd enjoy hearing suggestions. I'll post the 'After' images once this project is completed.

I'm such a sucker for the Danish style and your new Kabik is a wonderment.
What a beautiful pipe and that grain is stunning. You made a swell grab.
As to the stem, I'm such a traditionalist that I'd replace it with a similar vulcanite mouth piece. (I know. Boring, right? But still classic.)

Floyd Norwood could make a stem for that one at a decent price (an easy to make stick mount should be cheap). I think lucite stems look great on that style of pipe.
Having said that, the stem doesn't look too bad? Why not give a shot on restoring it? (unless there is damage not shown). That rough section near the chair leg feature should smooth out nicely I suspect.(800 grit paper)

I agree with fnord. A traditional style stem would be perfect for that pipe. No need to detract from the beautiful grain. A bit of reaming and you look good to go. Enjoy it.

Thanks for the advice guys. Will probably go with the traditional black stem. However, I think a Cumberland might work and match the color of this pipe. Maybe get two stems.

I can't wait to see what you do with the rim. A lot of of my freehands were estate buys and that molten lava look grabbed a root and growled.
Looking forward to your results.

If money isn't an issue, I agree on two stems. One fancy for you and one traditional for eventual resale.

Thanks for the advice guys! I've replaced the stem as close as possible to remain true. I do plan on getting another stem in Red Tortoise from Pipe Makers Emporium maybe.
Fnord I used my Dremel on the rim to remove the char but added a light touch of black dye. Just thought it looked proper. I've just started on the pipe and she has a way to go still. Mainly just showing the stem I chose works OK but I might still give it a slight bend.

I love what you've done! That top is amazing, friend.
When you have a minute would you please send me a PM and step me through the process? I've got a Dremel but it's under court order to stay 300 yds. away from my pipe collection. (The damned thing is scary fast and, unfortunately, I'm old, slow and operate with ten thumbs.)
Cheers.
