I think most Peterson Smokers will agree that something like the Donegal Rocky series takes a few more bowls to break in than the other ranges, but that's about it.

I will most certainly agree with you on that, I like the donegal series and mine took a few more smokes than normal to break it in. Other than that, the pipe performs and taste's fine. :puffy:

Ha ha!

I guess that makes me a special case then (something I've been told before by the way).

The Donegal I just got is one of the only new pipes I've purchased that took off from the very 1st bowl and has only gotten better!
agree--actually it is one of two--the other was a Grabow Royalton--both acquired in the past two manths--

I have three Peterson Arans (B5, 268, 05) and have had no problems with them at all. Never had a problem with the pipes tasting strange or gurgling too much etc. I love how they smoke, especially the p-lip stem. Infact I plan on mostly just buying Pete's.

Ok, got a new Eriksen by Nording in the mail yesterday. When I got home I loaded her up with some Old Gowrie and lit up. Well, when I bit down on the stem it tasted a little funny, and through the course of the first half of the bowl the smoke tastes horribly sour and astringent. Immediately this thread came to mind.
After my incredibly unsatisfying smoke, I cleaned her out from bowl to bit with some cask strength scotch. Right now im having some Carter Hall and the sour astringent taste seems to be mostly gone. Now, I understand Eriksen is the "economy" Nording line. So is it more common for the cheaper pipes to be dip stained? While cleaning this pipe I noticed coloration on the pipe cleaners other than the grey/black ash from my smoke. Dip stained maybe?

Try smoking a few bowls of a blend like Carter Hall (CH) or Prince Albert (PA). That seems to clear up a "sour" off tasting pipe. That failing you could give it a good cleaning. I like to clean using some spirits like bourbon or scotch. Run some through the stem and bowl, running pipe cleaners through the stem and neck. I then let some spirits sit in the bowl for an hour or so. Flush it all out and let it dry a day or two. Then smoke a couple bowls of CH or PA. This has always worked well for me.

I've heard this complaint so frequently that it has put me off to new Petes. I've decided to wait until I'm pretty sure the dipped ones are gone before chancing another Pete. Having said that, I love the one I have. I like the 'system' and the P-lip is very good. But I'm waiting a few more months before investing in another one. A couple more cobs will get me through until spring when I will buy the Peterson I'm currently obsessed with.

This is an issue that has been about for quite a few years, I have over 100 petes in my collection and would say that all new system petes from the late 1980's have had this breaking in problem untill they stopped the dip staining on system pipes just a few months ago, the dip stained pipes just need a little longer to break in but when done you end up with one of the best smokers that money can by, us peterson nuts just put up with it, I have had other brand pipes that have taken just as long to break in, in fact I would say from my experience the longer any pipe takes to break in the better they end up smoking.

Hmm I have the same problem with a Mr Brog I purchased. I keep looking at it, thinking I'd best light her up again but just can't bring myself to go through that again.
I'm presuming HM is joking but just incase he wasn't or before you try that at home .... Febreze is deadly to birds and fish, so I doubt it'd be real healthy for us! We've had several cases of Pet Stores spraying it around liberally to remove that "Pet Shop Stink", they've come in to open up and found half the store dead as Dodo's!
