It can be a range of things from how your mouth chemistry reacts to the Tabacco/blend. Smoking technique/packing...I don't want to be that guy, but aros are heavily cased with who knows what. Try smoking "Tabacco" figure out what "family" you enjoy smoking and go from there. i.e. Virginia, English ect

It's normal what you are going through. It took me years to appreciate Straight Virginias. years to smoke a heavy lat blend and taste the other tobaccos in the blend besides latakia. you are in a good place, a lot of knowledge on this forum.

Could it be that aros are just not for me because I like the flavor but I like English blends to

Just like lots of folks, when I started, I started with Aro's, and puffed too hard trying to get that delicious smell as a flavor. I found it doesn't work that way...I recommend slowing way down, puffing way less. For an Aromatic that I find really easy to smoke without bite, I recommend Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic.

I'm happy to help, and I know that lots of other folks on here are too. As you learn how the site works, and start digging into past conversation threads, you'll be exposed to a wealth of experience and knowledge on enjoying pipe smoking as a hobby.

Right off the bat, advice I would give is as follows:
Take care of your mouth, go ahead and let it recover for as long as you need before you smoke again.
If Aromatics are frying your mouth and English blends are not, then stay away from Aromatics for awhile. Get more used to going slow, sipping instead of puffing, and getting your packing/tamping right so you don't feel like you have to puff like bellows to stay lit (incidentally, drying tobacco out is pretty key to this).

Also, keep a glass of water handy while you smoke. Drinking water helps keep the mouth cool and the palate clean, which I find helps me enjoy the flavor and aroma of the tobacco.

I think the extra goop on aros tend to make a lot of them bitey unless you dry them out. If you squeeze some of it in a little ball that stays stuck together after you let go of it, it's probably a good idea to dry it.
I've mostly gotten bite not from going too fast in general, but when the tobacco was starting to go out and I would pull too hard and fast to avoid having to relight it.

Would you recommend starting off with English blends

Greetings from the Cayman Islands!

I started with aromatics; however, I learned quickly that the pack and cadence make a huge difference in the smoke. One nice puff every 10 seconds or so usually keeps my bowl pretty cool. There are times when I get a natural flow going and don't strictly adhere to that rule as well. I just "feel it", and my attunement increases with experience.

If they appeal to you then yes, absolutely. English blends are what made me a pipe smoker, having been unimpressed after trying a couple aros.
I have had good luck with early morning pipe and really like it what is another good English in your opinion
