Hullo, hullo! Sorry to start a thread instead of searching for others, but I seek opinions. I had wanted to purchase a pipe under 100, as I have recently started with my first pipe, a churchwarden style from The Shire that I found at a local head shop (10inches from the chamber, which is 3/4" wide and ~1" deep, and the dimensions I have kind of liked), knowing I wouldn't find anything nice, but wanting to get started any way possible. It has since let me down, as I am a novice and have given it a great deal of use and abuse. The plastic lip bit has detached from the stem and attaches back rather loosely. So I want to purchase a pipe proper. Probably not a churchwarden, even though I liked the look and feel of the dimensions, but maybe something different. Any opinions? I began smoking Good Companion (lovely blend, not sure from what though) and have since moved to Capstan Blue flake, as well as Savinelli Doblone D'Oro, both of which I have enjoyed a great deal! Learning and using the fold has been fun for me.

I likely don't want to go with a churchwarden (they seems to get some flak), but enjoyed the length and do not want something short. I believe that I like the bend, and the thicker bulldog or dublin styles. But cannot be certain, as I am pushed online (can't find much locally these days). I have found the Stanwell: Hans Christian Andersen, which seems promising and right up my alley. Then, I have stumbled upon the 7 Day Set ideal and perhaps should, instead of one for $100, go for three: a Missouri Meerschaum Cob, and something else. Is Mr. Brog a reputable quality? How does one tell/where can I be directed to research what goes into making quality pipes from the right materials. Any and all information is much appreciated!

Thanks very much for your time and expertise!

I wonder if the difference will prove to be a pain! It won't serve to dampen my spirits, I'm sure.

Couldn't locate the Peterson on sale for 57 at smokingpipes, perhaps it sold between now and then. I would certainly be interested in picking up something Irish! Alas.

Ropp pipes looked terrific, and more than affordable. I had read that the French Ropp's had a slightly smaller draught hole, but that it didn't affect much in the way of draw. Nothing of concern?

Still interested in the Stanwell HCA to sate my churchwarden fix, but I am not finding them anywhere under 100$, perhaps that is not the case any longer. Thanks again for all input! Great forum to stumble upon.

How about a Ropp?

Looks nice but smooth ballsack is a terrible name for a pipe (or maybe my auto translator has gone haywire).

Since your entrance to the pipe world was the same as my own, a themed churchwarden, that broke easily...

My next step was a bag of smokable second cobs. Cheap and characterful. 6 legends that cost the same as the churchwarden.

That would be my recommendation.

I didn't get six, but I have ordered both Country Gentlemen styles that I am excited to try!

I like the Ropp Honore de Balzac recommendation. Now I've found the Ropp Vintage Smooth Bent Dublin, which is nice. I am finding I am keen on the Bent Dublin

Good stuff thanks!

Welcome! I just got my first Vauen and love it.
