New Pipe Tampers

Saw some pipe tampers on smoking pipes that I really liked, but couldn't really justify the price for something I'm gonna lose under the driver seat or inside the recliner.

Shot a picture over to my neighbor and a couple hours later he sent me this.

From left to right - white oak wine stave .44 magnum, white oak firewood .44 magnum, and granny Smith apple wood .38 special.

I've always had a special allure for tampers made from rifle shells. I have made a few for my own usage and to give to friends, but nothing as nice as these.
I agree with @Roach1 that your neighbor should continue with this.

I’ve used a 5.56 round many times while in the service just out of convenience . Having the bullet tip in place is nice to dig out ash.
I’ve also made up some inert reloads to use a well.
If I had a lethe I’d be making some like yours. Please keep us posted as you add more to the collection as those are really nice!

I need more practice on the lathe I got recently, but I see some Mesquite/brass tampers in my (and who knows, maybe others’) future.

Got a fresh supply of Tampers! Almond, Aromatic Cedar, Granny Smith, and Oak.

Do I need dozens of tampers? I do not. Do I want dozens of tampers? For some reason, I do.

I cant justify a tamper without a pick. I've tried, and whenever I dont have a pick, the tobacco dottle gets stuck to the chamber bottom

That's definitely his thing. When I commissioned him for my falcon pipe rack he was only moderately excited. When I told him I had no guidelines, I'd never seen a custom Falcon Pipe Rack and he would have to just figure it out, his face lit up. He's in his element when he's turned completely loose on a project.

Somewhere around here I have a tamper I made with a 338 Lapua Magnum case and bullet.
It really makes people cringe....because I pressed a projectile into the nickel plated case, and put in a dummy primer.
So when I use it, it looks like I'm using a live round.
I'm so silly.
