just like to say hi guys. im mark. very new to pipe smoking, but took to it like a duck to water and absolutely love it. wish i would of found this wonder to man years ago !! im still very wet round the gills and not very clued up at all, but im learning. started smoking condor, now smoking dunhill royal yacht. tried some irish twist, but it almost blew my head off !! my mouth has been aliitle sore too just lately. my stomach started to get alittle sore, so i stared to spit out the saliva, and that has seemed to cure it. but i am worried about the sore mouth and if im doing anything wrong, or is it because im new to it ?? i smoked cigarettes for many years, but none at all now. i smoke about 6-8 pipes aday. any tips would be well appreciated guys from you masters of this wonderful pastime. cheers guys, from a true devotee to our cause.

What do you mean by sore mouth? Like sore gums? I've had a problem with my gums myself recently. Started smoking 2-3 bowls a day and I hadn't let my gingivitis heal up enough. Had to give up pipes for three weeks and get on a huge regiment of flossing, mouthwashing, and brushing three times a day and waterpicking twice for two weeks then tailed off to brushing twice a day with flossing and mouthwashing in the middle still. Healed up fairly well but not completely so I'll probably take one more week or two off from pipe smoking and hopefully the right side of my mouth will heal up completely like the left has. If this is your problem as well I hope my post can be of help.

Hello Mark, welcome to the hobby. Did you cut out cigarettes by smoking your pipe? If so that could be the reason your mouth is hurting. If you try and replace an addiction with a subtler form of smoking with less nicotine you will inevitably smoke faster, harder, and more than your mouth is used to. 6-8 pipes a day is quite a bit of smoking, considering a decent bowl should last about an hour; 6-8 hours of smoking a day can exhaust such soft flesh as your mouth contains. I would cut down on your smoking and continue to change the way that you subconsciously view tobacco use by reading the literature and settling down for a very slow, cool, and relaxing smoke with a drink and zero distractions (obviously quiet is a luxury not many can afford in this world but it is one of few inherent needs). If I do not get in at least one day of quiet fishing in a week I think I would lose control. Good luck.

thank you so much guys for the advise. im taking good notice of what you all are saying. i think that yes, what i did was to replace the cigarettes with the pipe, and i tried to get the nicotine fix just as fast. it was not happening without going at it like a steam engine and getting hiccups for my effort toboot. ive slowed down now, and my brain got used to the idea that no matter what - the nicotine aint gonna come any faster. ive even been trying to compromise by looking on the internet for "high nicotine" pipe tabaccos. but whats the use in pipe smoking if i just want a damn fix of nicotine. of course i do want that, but i want to enjoy the tabacco too. im doing that now - honestly guys !! im not having my first pipe til ive washed, dressed, and eaten breakfast. then another at lunch time, another at 5-6 p.m, and maybe two at night. 5 bowls, maybe 6 on a "good" day !! but gimme a break guys, i am fresh off the ciggeys only 3 weeks almost. i just need to settle abit more i think, but i do so adore the taste and that slow build up of nicotine in my blood til my face flushes and my cartroid artery pulses in my neck - then i put the pipe down. im smoking "dunhill royal yacht" at the moment, and the mellow taste helps my mouth settle down after the burn i was getting. and the nicotine is anough to cure my craving.

Get through the transition however you have to but do it. I'm certainly no antismoking advocate, but cigarettes really serve no beneficial purpose.

Mark, welcome! I'm also new to pipe smoking. This group is a great one. There's a lot of knowledge, humor, and cool attitude here. I've learned a lot from these guys, and I'm better for it. I'm happy to be a member here. Check out the advertisers on the bottom left. I've ordered from several of them and they are as good as it gets.
