Hi guys. I'm a pervivan 47 years old. I have never smoked cigarettes, but I was used to smoke cigars once or twice a moth.
Two month ago I started with pipe smoking and I'm very enthusiastic. My first pipe is one that I inherited from my father, a Calabresi Metamorfosi from Italy, made on briar. I love it. 2 weeks ago I bought a Vauen here in Lima, very small, so I keep it in my car. My older son is now traveling by Europe and I have asked him to buy me more pipes (I'm afraid I can't stop anymore craving for more pipes :) ) He has bought me 2 Bruken pipes in Spain, and one Savinelli in Florence-Italy, that I will received in a month.
In Lima Peru we have a very limited choices of pipe tobacco. The only, more or less decent, Tobacco I have found is Mc Baren. I have already tried Vainilla, Original Choice and a Mixture one. In order to try better Tobacco I have purchased 2 tins of Dunhill (nightcap and early morning) at pipesandcigars.com, however I will have to wait some more weeks to receive them.
I'm a complete beginner on pipe smoking and I still have a very hard time avoiding my pipes go out many, many times during my smoking. I'm reading a lot, watching many videos, and I have checked several posts from this forum. By now, I think a have decent packing and lightening techniques, but a big problem is the tobacco moisture. In Lima we have a average humidity of 80%, so I'm trying the microwave method also.
Well, that's all for now. I am happy to be here. I will continue reviewing the posts, and surely sometimes I will make you some questions :)
Nice to meet you all ! Nice pipe smoking !

Welcome aboard! Relights are very common, and nothing to fear. As long as you are enjoying the journey, you are doing it right!

Here
Welcome from Texas, USA.
It sounds like you are on the right track for developing a good technique.
You may find that the aromatic tobaccos you've been smoking are harder to dry and you may have some better luck with the Dunhills once they arrive.
If you are a patient man, you may try to smoke a bowl for a few minutes and then sit it down for 20 or 30 minutes. When you return, you may find it drier and more flavorful. Your local humidity may just prove to be a constant challenge. But, we here have faith in you to overcome any obstacles!
If you need some guaranteed dry and inexpensive tobacco to try, add some Daughters & Ryan tobacco to your next order.

Oh, btw, yhbriar, we have a term for your illness. It's called PAD - Pipe Acquisition Disorder. Don't worry -- there's no cure for it, & no 12-step quitting program either. .
There *is* a *2*-step program. 1) Pack up all your pipes & tobacco. 2) Send them to Chasingembers. :)

Welcome! What part of Lima? My parents lived near Jockey Plaza for a couple of years. I visited a few times and have some fun memories like smoking cigars at the casinos in Miraflores and watching some horse races. The food was amazing, Punta Sal, Mangos, Los Anos Loco de San Isidro, and Costa Verde are some I fondly remember.

¡Bienvenido! Lots of very nice, interesting and knowledgeable people here. This place is a must for any begginer pipe smoker. I hope you enjoy the advice, the community and keep to the hobby.

Also, I feel your pain with the humidity. Where I'm from it also hovers in the high 70s to 80s, which makes my fondness for flakes a bit more laborious.

Saludos desde Puerto Rico.

Hi everyone, and thanks a lot for the greetings and the advices. I haven't found the way to reply each of your posts, I don't know if it is a restriction of the forum, or I have missed the button :)

In the spring time here, I often have the house open and experience 60-70% humidity.
I think the trick to my suggestion is that you heat the bowl for a bit and it dries the remaining tobacco in the chamber despite the outside conditions.
I'm no scientist or expert, just sharing what has some times worked for me.
If you try it, let us know how it works and we all will benefit from your success or misery! :puffy:

I will try jaytex969 ! In fact, some days I start a bowl after office lunch, and finished on my way home several hours later. I can tell you that it tastes better then, but not sure about getting dryer.

What do you do about it edwinbaz?
I let it air out on some paper towel for longer periods of time and just be patient. I've read of people that prep their tobacco for the rest of the day early in the morning and come to it later. I've done that to some success, but right now I'm smoking some Luxury Bullseye Flake that's behaving splendidly and I just left it out little over half an hour. It varies and I'm no expert on the mechanics of drying, so I just play it by feel.
