Hi everyone

I recently brought my first ‘higher quality’ pipe online. It’d a rustic Peterson 106 army mount, but I’ve just inspected it and noticed a chip or something at the bottom.

Should I be concerned enough to return it or is this common and not likely to cause an issue down the line.

I have attached pictures

totally common. Pits and voids and things like that are part of the natural charm of briar. If it bothers you you could try to dye the spot so it doesn't stand out so much. The petersons I have show that the bottom of the pipe is where they care the least about minor issues. :)

All if your tobacco is going to fall out if that hole in a few days puffy

But on a more serious note as others said if its a brand new pipe, and the pit bothers you, you could return it. Or if its not too annoying you could color it in.

I personally would be annoyed but not enough to replace it. Im already hard on my pipes, this would just be “pre-conditioning” for me haha

Do you get any moisture on your hand when smoking?
I ask this because I bought a new Peterson in 2021 or 2022 and it had a small pinhole that went all the way through the bowl. About 1/3 of the way through a bowl, I started getting moisture on my hand that was seeping through.
And of course I didn't keep my receipt.

I sent it to Peterson in Dublin with a brief description of the issue and where it was. They returned my damaged pipe, and sent a brand new one as well.

I'm not a huge fan of Peterson. I have 5 of them and only 2 are worth a damn.
But I like to give credit where it is due. Their customer service is A+

Looks like a superficial chip and could either be a fill that didn't stick or a weak spot in the surface. Try poking it lightly to see if the wood is soft or just a small chip missing. That can tell you more if you have an issue with the smokability of the pipe, or get out your sharpie to cover the spot.

It’s not a surface scratch, more like a hole of some sort.
Never the less I’m smoking some delux navy rolls right now and taking it for what it is. Enjoying the pipe quite nicely I’d say

Won’t cause any problems but I wouldn’t think twice about returning it. In my opinion, that’s not character or charm, that’s poor quality control.

My first “higher quality” pipe was a Peterson 102 rusticated Short Army that had what seemed to be a pit in the inside wall of chamber. I knew it would bug me, so SPcom swapped it for another one.

But you’ve smoked it, so now you’re committed.

I didn’t let it phase me, and now have quite a few Pete’s that I love.
