For now, take care of mom. Go to appointments with her. Make sure she has what she needs when she needs it. Be present and available.
For the kid - well. You'll learn as you go. We're talking about someone who is going to have his/her own unique personality. Try not to say "no" unless you have a good reason. Be around as much as you can. Be in tune with their behavior and adjust yours as necessary. Help him or her understand the world as best you can. It'll be messy, but it's worth it.
The most important thing I try to remind myself of is: They didn't necessarily ASK to be here, so when the going gets tough, don't be too hard on them.

just remember you're his Father, not his best friend , this touchy feelie thing makes for a kid that has no boundaries, love em but make them respect you.
Couldn't agree more. Actually there is a lot of great advice here! Becoming a father was one of the best things I've ever done. In truth I've found many similarities between smoking a pipe and working through life's challenges. I think you have a for on firm ground even if it might be a little frightening right now. Congratulations and I have no doubt you will be a great father!

Congratulations man!!

Remember to have fun with it. The rest really comes very naturally.

If you can swing it, get a new pipe for the special day. I wish I would have with my 2.
