You can still park at Harrahs and get free parking by using your Total Rewards card for 15 minutes in a slot...you don't even have to put any money in the slot...just the card. However, there is a garage directly across the street from Generations Hall that has parking for roughly $10 for all day parking.

Not charging in any US metro area is unheard of. $10 seems a bit low, but I bet they catch on fast. It's $10 for a few hours in Philly for the monthly pipe club meeting...

Just FYI...all other events will continue as scheduled...the Perique Tour will still be departing from Harrahs Hotel Lobby at 9am on Friday morning, and the Friday evening social will still be held at Mannings on Friday evening...

The daughter has dinner reservations for us at Cafe Amelie early on Friday, so I'll see everyone around 7:30 at Mannings (which is an excellent choice).

In Vegas there's hardly any places you have to pay to park. Just about all of it is complimentary.

"Pay to park" is a sign that a city has gotten too big and the parasites have moved in
Space in NO has always been at a premium. Geographicly there is limited area defined by water on three sides and the fourth is swampland. Vegas can spread its tackiness for miles into the desert.

Yah, in my small cow-town of a city that looks like it just dropped out of an Old West movie, parking is not free either. Someone owns that land, and they want to make money just like everyone else who owns commercial property. In the old days, it would have cost money for you to board your horse, absolutely anywhere you went. Space, hay, and air, nothing is free.

The Vegas mentality is that if you comp the parking patrons will spend more money inside the establishment which is typically true.
There are a few paid parking areas downtown, but there are also casinos with free parking garages on the edges of downtown Las Vegas. You can easily park at one of them and walk ten minutes to where you need to go.
Actually Vegas is in a mountain valley, so our "tackiness" can only spread so far. Even now most developers are going up not out and making high rise condo towers and what not.

In my experience, the really prosperous towns are like this. Businesses build enough parking and then some, inviting people into the downtown area to spend money on real products, not a parasite business like a car lot.
The cities that are in trouble are the ones where people are so zombie-like that they keep going downtown and dropping ducats because they have lost connection to any other activity. These are lonely places.
Were I concerned about having a healthy city, I would get rid of the parking meters and other impediments and make it as simple and convenient as possible for people to show up and have a good time there. That maintains strength of the product. Otherwise, it increasingly degrades, leaving only the fanatical (Gosh, that sounds like a major computer company... wonder who).

I've paid exorbitant NYC (Manhattan mostly) parking prices on more than a few occasions. 10 bucks is chump change by comparison! :puffy:

FYI the parking lots on Decatur Street in the French Quarter have started charging, prepay, it is 25.00 for 4 hours. The lot by Generations Hall is quite the bargain.

I received a disturbing email today for Harrah's customers.
From the NOLA Pipe Show.
SInce we are no longer at Harrah's Casino for the show the room rates are unfortunatly no longer viable. If you made a reservation, please follow up with them directly. The good news is, the Hilton Garden Inn has a $150-$160 a night room rate and it's attached to Generations Hall, our new location. To book a room at the discounted rate call : 504-525-0044

If anyone has successfully booked the Hilton Garden Inn at the discounted rate, please PM me. Apparently I'm doing it wrong...
