The food is fantastic! The Pat O'Brian's Hurricanes got me............ those things are stout! I can usually hold my liquor, but whoo-boy, the heat and the drink got me!

If you need/want a place to chill and relax, the New Orleans City park is worth checking out- it's huge and has a lot of shade, benches, and cool art works. We took a streetcar up from downtown...... worthwhile IMO.........

Have fun!
Great, thank you! I’ve never been to NO before but it’s always been high on my list for the music and food. I’ll make sure to include the park as well

Actually traveling by train so I think the 6 hours in Chicago will be plenty of exploration time. I'm def. looking forward to seeing Iwan Reis in person!
Ah ha! You will have plenty of time then. It's an easy walk from union station to Iwan Reis.

Enjoy the empire builder! I've taken it twice from Chicago to Seattle/Portland. There's about an hour of travel in Montana where you go through track-to-horizon sunflower fields on either side of the train. One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

When are you coming down?
The next New Orleans Pipe Club meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Mayan Imports in Metairie.

I wouldn't suggest one of those rent-a-bikes for the trip because of the traffic. Lyft and Uber are in New Orleans so they would be a better choice or you could take a taxi but check on the cost first. It's probably about seven miles from the Superdome to Mayan Imports in Metairie but it is across parish (county) lines so the cost may be higher than Uber.

You didn't say where you were staying. If it's one of the downtown hotels, check with the concierge they may be able to help you.

The main Mayan Imports location is actually the one of Magazine St. but it is more "cigar-centric" than the one in Metairie. The last time I was in that location, they did have a few pipes and tins of tobacco but it was more limited. They also had a small smoking lounge area. I haven't been to that location in years though because I personally have no reason to go into that part of New Orleans.

As for transportation to it, there are taxis, Uber, Lyft and the city buses.

Depending on your time and interests, I would suggest you take a day and visit the National WWII museum. It's fascinating and covers parts of two blocks. It takes pretty much five or six hours to do the visit justice.

That all sounds amazing, thank you! We’re staying right down in the French Quarter and only going to be there 2 nights so it’ll be a bit of a whirlwind trip. I’ll be sure to check with the concierge though. Thanks again for the helpful info!

The WWII Museum is a must-do. The Quarter is fun for one night, but gets tiresome. If you seek music in a little less touristy environment, Frenchman street is where to go. Smoking is now not very welcome in most place, even with outdoor seating. It used to be wide open (even eight years ago, when we first started visiting our daughter)

Good to know. I love ww2 history as it is so I’ll make sure it’s on the list.

Music and food are the main draws for my wife and I so thank you for that.

I was also going to look into the outdoor smoking rules. I think my wife said we’re across the street from a big park so I was hopeful that would be a good spot for respite and smoke.

I assume you are aware of the pending RR Union workers strike. I even heard a report that Amtrak has already started cancelling scheduled trips. I assume that will allow you to get a refund and then you perhaps could book air faire to New Orleans and allow for more time to see New Orleans and surrounding areas and activities such as perhaps a swamp boat tour, see area antebellum plantation homes, or even go offshore fishing in the Gulf!

Yeah I just heard this morning. No news from Amtrak about my trips yet so fingers crossed!

My wife and I spent last weekend there in the French Quarter. Theres cigar shops all over but not much in the way of pipes. Mayan Imports on Magazine has a few pipes and a few tins, but I wound up just getting a couple cigars. Let me know if you have any questions about NO we go there all the time.

@r4wk5t4r So you'll be riding the City of New Orleans then???
Is B&M a generally used term in the USA 🇺🇲 for brick and mortar physical shops?
I find it confusing as in the UK we have a discount store chain called B&M Bargains / home stores...
