I spent a very happy hour reading the introduction and a bit of the first chapter. Too much work for me to be able to enjoy a solid read, but so far I've found this "last" book from Ben an engaging and erudite narrative, packed with fascinating information for the enthusiast of pipe history.

I look forward to getting into this book when Warner Animation fires the lot of us gives us the last two weeks of December as a paid vacation, a gift for continuing to pump out content through all of the past 18 months.

More book-ish information. The great-grandson of Gustav Fischer and I are assembling color photos of many of the carved meerschaum pipes from Gustav Fischer Sr. of Boston for a tribute album, along with detailed information of his life. It will be published sometime in early 2022. (Frankly, I did not know where to post this news, because it probably belongs in a different forum, but I was unable to find the correct one, so here it is!) Contact me, ben70gray@gmail.com, for more information re: availability and estimated price.

I am not interested in coercing you to purchase my latest book, but I thought that I would share what a recent buyer, Gene Umberger, a life-long collector of pipe and tobacco books, had to say: "Personally, I was particularly fascinated by Ben’s numerous accounts of the role of tobacco in WWI and that story really begins with Chapter 4. The number of cigarettes supplied to combatants is simply staggering and the war saw not only the triumph of the allies, but of the cigarette. Within just a few years following the war, cigarettes became the dominant form of tobacco consumption in the U.S. and only grew exponentially thereafter. But going into the war, the cigar, chewing tobacco, and the pipe still noticeably had their adherents. And Ben’s unearthing of contemporary accounts of their use, particularly of the latter, is quite interesting (the whole tobacco fund movement, to which he devotes a chapter, also reveals, yes, a “Soldiers' Pipe Fund”).

"Especially in seeking out firsthand accounts of tobacco use, the book obviously benefits not only from the marvelous resources of the internet, but also from Ben’s 50-year history of collecting and publishing and the accumulated knowledge that has yielded. As Ben admits, the history he has undertaken is packed with detail, and included with that is guidance to published works and online resources (including film). There's no question it will be a valuable resource for people with a variety of interests.

I spent some quality time with my copy last night and it is a treasure trove of information! Academic (it's history) but more than just a summary of facts and figures - insights come through as well, great anecdotes and sets the record straight on some things so it's a good reference for the future. If internet "sources" started sourcing facts from this book we'd have more accurate stuff out there! Glad I bought it! Not too late to add to your list for someone or even Merry Christmas to yourself!
