Title edited to make it specific to poster -jpm

Hello to all. I'm Mark, 59 from the UK and have taken up pipe smoking 3 weeks ago. Dad was an avid pipe smoker and I just love the smell of pipe tobacco. I am clueless about the hobby knowing only how to fill, smoke and clean my pipes with pipe tool and cleaners. I look forward to learning more.

Much obliged, I do have one actually. I know stingers are regarded as evil but on one of my pipes it actually doesn't impede the draw. Another chap here told me mine was a newer type but I was supplied with tiny rubbery rings, 9mm, that were described as 'filters'. Now I thought a stinger would negate a need for filters but can anyone confirm what these rings are and how to fit them please? Pic attached.

One thing you will quickly find out is that there is no consensus at all on most things pipe related. A stinger is *generally* considered to be gimmicky, but if it works for you, use it.

I've never seen those before. I don't think that is a filter though.
