I have just recently started smoking a pipe. Prior to the pipe I was a cigarette smoker for nearly 20 years. I quit about 5 or so years ago as it seemed I was smoking more for the addition then the enjoyment. I am also the type to jump into a hobby with both feet, so in the last few weeks I have been searching the forums here and learning a lot. But I have a question that I can't seem to answer. I smoke about a bowl a day but not everyday. I have been kicking around a way to carry my pipe and tobacco to the river. I am a fly fisherman. What would work well to carry a bowl or two of tobacco, pipe and tamper, that will work well, is inexpensive, and wil not alter the taste of my tobacco? I don't like the idea of ziplock baggies, and need something that will work regardless of type of tobacco I choose to carry that day.( I.e. Cavendish one time, English blend the next, etc.) I only have two blends I am currently enjoying but I believe that will change quickly. I have some cherry cavendish bulk from the local tobacco shop and a custom blend called Saxagonian (English blend) from the same folks. I personally do not believe the will get along well if the favors get mixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the pipe hobby.
You might look around for a zipper or fold over tobacco pouch on line or at you local shop that would hold several bowls worth to carry down to the river. Separate pouch for separate blends.
The companies that advertise on the site do carry pouches and there may be just what you are looking for.
Best of luck and have some nice smokes.

Smoking Pipes has a 2 pipe case with room for some baccy for $16. You'll still have to go the ziplock route with a case like this. If you go the baccy pouch route it will ghost from something as strong as cherry Cavendish, so you'll end up buying multiple pouches for different blends. As a fellow fisherman I will state the obvious: don't take any expensive pipes on the water. Unless you have a cord attached, you are likely to watch it float downstream. Cobs are perfect for fishing :puffy:

Welcome to the forum. I will be watching closely so see what suggestions people have. I love to fish and smoke; however, I have not as yet found a great solution.

That is good advice on the cob pipe, I must admit I never thought of it but I will invest in a cob pip very soon. Does it hurt to keep the pipe in the same bag/pouch as the tobacco? Providing you let it cool.

papared: As you have decided not to use the easiest and most convenient solution, the sandwich bag, I'd suggest a Falcon pipe, with a couple of pre-loaded bowls in the plastic lined pocket of your fly-fishing vest. Wrap the bowls in plastic wrap or some such to reduce to spillage.
Hard to beat the convenience of resealable plastic bags though. Squeeze the air out, seal it tight and you are good to go. And, when you slip on a stone, a quick dunking will not drown your tobacco.
Cobs are a good idea. I use them when fishing, they're cheap and it's not to stressful watching one float down the stream. I just return to my gear and get another pipe from my kit. I consider them to be disposable.

Falcon bowls are a bit costy to consider them as disposable.

Welcome to the forum Papared, I too am a fly fisherman. I would suggest taking along two pre-packed cobs, one with each tobacco you like, sealing them in a ziplock bag and keeping them in your vest. When you are ready, just pull out the pipe you want and light her up. When you inevitably drop them in the water....no big loss, DO NOT TAKE a briar out fishing, at least not until you've been smoking for a very long time and get your technique down pat. Again, welcome to the forum and I'll look for you on the water.

Welcome to the forum!
Double baggied works for my fishing, travel, hiking. Roll up the individual tobaccos and stick both into another ziplock. You may also be able to stick a tin or two in your tackle box.
Second on the corn cob or at least a cheap burner while fishing. I just snapped a stem on a good pipe that was in the breast pocket of my vest, and I leaned against a rail to net my pal's fish, and, SNAP! It snapped, fortunately at the tenon, not stummel.
Good luck with both the fishing and the smoking!

Cobs are really good for this purpose. Even an immersion isn't going to be a problem, and except in a strong current, you can rescue the pipe. If you want a briar pocket pipe, I'd go for a short one, bent or straight, with a thick shank and stem, light weight for clenching. What breaks a pipe in your pocket is usually leverage, so a short pipe will not be easily snapped.
