So I've been smoking a briar for many years and just picked up my first meer carved by Baglan. Cute little guy...

Nice! A gargoyle is one of the very few figural meers which has interested me. I can't wait to see how that guy colors. Enjoy

Well you picked a very nice pipe by an excellent carver for your first meerschaum. Baglan does great work and uses very good quality meerschaum, so the pipe should be fairly light in weight and will color up nicely. Enjoy the new pipe!

Thanks :) I can't wait to get it in my hands. There were a few there I was looking at but the gargoyle looked so good! I've always wanted a meer but could never justify the price. I did want to get a small plain meer pipe too so I'm still on the lookout for one :)
Now to read up on meers and their care!

Thanks Cortez, an interesting read. When I get back home tonight I shall read it more thoroughly. I loved that marbled pipe in the last photo on the page. I'd love to own one like that!

I was looking at pics of the gargoyles at the National Cathedral to see if there was anything like it, but there wasn't quite a match.
Are these pipes carved as one-offs? It's amazing.

cwarmouth they are one off hand carved. he may carve another one but it won't be exactly the same.
I think i'm going to call him trouble. That sounds like a fitting name!

So I just got him. The pipe is _massive_. Far too big to hold with the stem only so I'm grabbing it by the gargoyle to try to keep my hands from the bowl and stem. I loaded it up with 4 year old Westmorland Mixture and it's smoking like a dream. I may have just become addicted to meers......... I'll get some photos up soon :)

That's a great carving! I think I'd be afraid of that thing stirring to life when the pipe gets warm enough.

Nicely-carved, this. Just cute enough and just scary enough. Seems Baglan's format has changed; in the '90s and early '00s, all of Baglan's pipes were, he termed it, "double carved," they all had two different subjects on them (one usually being on the bottom of the bowl/stem).
