Greetings,

Recently got back into pipe smoking after a long hiatus, usually smoked cigars, but that gets expensive fast.

I got a few cobs (pipes I don't feel bad about abusing) and one nice briar so far.

Anyway, I've tried various tobaccos, some I didn't really care for, some were great. I'm really liking "early morning pipe" and "nightcap" from peterson.

I tried a couple aromatics, one being called "cult", which was tasty, but it didn't really have a..."bite" to it. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I think I like the harsher smokes more? I'm just not really liking the tobaccos that taste...flat? I tried some Balkan sasieni, which also seemed too mild.

That being said, would any of you have suggestions for me based on what I've described? Thank you for your time.

Hi and welcome from South Korea.
Taste preference is a personal journey. I went through quite a few tobaccos before I found my "go-to's", which are the same type of blend. Here's the thing, after I tried the ones I settled on, I tried going back to a blend, which I thought at the time, was THE one and of course I'd bought quite a lot of it. I don't like it anymore. I've given tins of it away to some buddies of mine who are just starting out in the hoppy and they too like it, it is Peterson's My Mixture 965.
I read and listened to reviews, until I found what I like. It really is a mine field. But if you like EMP & NC, then try and find other tobaccos with the same leaves.
Don't make the mistake of buying loads of one particular blend like I did, until you're fully satified. That sounds easier said than done.
Hope this is of some help.

Hello from Taiwan.
Early morning and Nightcap are English blend type of tobacco. I assumed you're into that type of blend.
Check out this website: tobacco review
It has many informations about every blends of tobacco.
You can purchase other brand's English blends to see if you like them or not.

Maybe try an ounce or two each of bulk C&D Old Joe Krantz and Billy Budd, to see if you like burley blends. Anything you don't like, jar it and try it again in a year or so. Tastes change. Don't buy a whole lot of any one blend, no matter how much you like it, for a year or two, I advise.

Peterson My Mixture 965 and Ashton Artisan's Blend; I believe you will thoroughly enjoy these two if you liked Early Morning Pipe and Night Cap- I favour them over the latter.

Welcome from Florida. I recommend the following blends for a cigar smoker. You will need to read up on smoking flake tobacco. I would stat with the cube cut and then once you feel comfortable with that try your hand at folding and stuffing. If you do these and get good at them, then you are in the major leagues.

Capstan Blue Flake
Peterson Navy Rolls
Peterson Irish Flake
Mac Baren Old Dark Fired
None of these are goopy aromatics. These blends are top of the line, best in class and once you get these smoking great for you, the entire world of pipe tobacco opens up for you.
Buy a real pipe. A Savinelli or a Winslow around a 100-150 bucks with no filter is my recommendation.

Welcome from Idaho. I seem to like the fuller blends myself with the exception of petersons morning pipe ( it’s still medium) I saw some guys recommend Burley whether medium or dark fired the smoke is good ,flavorful and has a good Nic hit. For me Kramers Father Dempsey is a good in between early morning pipe and night cap “all day english“
but a fuller Balkan can be good all day too like C&D super Balkan and a bit smoother Balkan Supreme. Like others said buy things in bulk bags like an ounce or two and narrow down your pallet. I have found that shag cuts really suit me and have been going through the catalog sampling 2 ounce bags , so far I’m really liking Kendal dark and Dark birdseye. I try to have to have a good mix of tobacco families throughout the day/ week . With pipes dedicated to English/Balkan , Burley/ Burley based blend, and Virginia/Virginia based blend. I couldn’t hack the aro‘s I have some jarred. And like others said you might not like something now but jar it up and come back to it you may like it after you come back to it.The search never ends because your tastes change over time/season/mood… Enjoy the hunt…

Wow, lots of suggestions! Thank you all. I have tried capstan navy flake and I really do like that as well. I didn't know it required something special to smoke them, I just tore up a flake and stuffed it in a pipe, and it burned great.

I love the capstan. This is the briar pipe I have, I'm not sure if it's as good as what you mentioned. I just thought it looked neat to be honest.

Welcome!

I came from cigars as well and still enjoy them regularly.

I track with you on the “bite”. Not sure if it’s because I’m looking for a similar spice/pepper as I get from cigars or what.

I started out mostly Englishes (Old Dublin and Quite Nights are favs) but have gravitated more towards vapers now.

Escudo really hits the spot for an anytime smoke for me. Has that spice/pepper hit in the sinuses and doesn’t destroy my palate. Warped Kings Stride is another favorite, it has a cigar cavendish in it that reminds me of a mild version of a chocolatey maduro.

Good luck on your journey!
