Looks like an effective process. I'm curious to know if the stem will stay bright in the long term.

bleche wite is staggeringly effective stuff. i dilute it 1 part per 25 parts water for use as a household cleaner. i've used it to dissolve the flaking chrome off a dr. grabow viking, followed by paint stripper for the undercoar, to reveal a natural aluminum finish.
it will also completely dissolve the finish off chromed plastic in about 2min flat. i did this to a worn twist pipe (plain plastic version of merton's super twist).
this is with the original formula, which i still have bottles in stock. no idea what the new formulation is like.

Regular bleach will pull the 'chrome' off of 'chrome plated' model kit parts too. Then they can be painted.
