Once an airline screener would not take my carry permit with my picture as valid government issued id. I ask for a supervisor and explained that it was a government issued id and I had to be screened far more than anyone with just a drivers license (which I also had as well as a passport. The permit was just the first thing I saw in my wallet and I wanted to see if they accepted it.) I was permitted to pass thru and apologized to greatly. Since then, I have seen carry permits listed as not allowed form of id. I really question why. They dont hand them out like they do drivers license. I guess it’s just more wokeness. 🤣

Hello from London UK.

Older women like being ID'd, sometimes. For anyone else legit, it's plain irritating.
When I was 16 and working in a grocery store an attractive woman came through my check out with a younger woman, when I got to the beer I (kiddingly) asked her if she was over 21 and had ID. She was shocked and said she was with her daughter. I said "Oh, you're not sisters ?" She showed me the ID; paid and left. Her husband found me a week later and thanked me and said she was on cloud 9 for the whole week !

As someone who use to sell regulated items such as tobacco and alcohol I will tell you that multiple government agencies run “sting” operations at such places. They purposefully pay elderly men and women with expired IDs or no IDs at all to see if regulations and laws are being followed. As well as underage people with proper IDs but aren’t old enough. Has happened to me dozens of times. They go as far to send a letter to the place of business weeks later stating such “operation” took place and the customer was either turned away or a purchase was made illegally. Indeed their job can be in jeopardy if a sale was made. An expired ID isn’t a proper form of identification. Nonetheless rudeness about the situation would cause me to spend my money elsewhere.

Remember a clerk or even the manager of a convenience store does not set policy. They simply follow corporate policy. If the clerk wants to keep their job they need to follow policy.

Don't think I would comfortable not having some type of valid ID.

LOL, 67 years old and never dealt with an ID requirement like this before? Really believe if your DL is expired that someone would accept it?

I'm more than skeptical but . . . . retailers can lose their selling privileges pretty easily and in some states expect/encourage local law enforcement to do checks (i.e., send someone in with no id as one example to see if they can purchase) so the easiest way to be safe and avoid mistakes by lazy or unmotivated employees costing them their license for a time is to card everyone.

Been really common around here and other places for years - I sure don't look under age, but happy to provide a clerk my id so they can do their job. And yes, I used to think it was odd and wasn't real happy about being "carded" but that was many moons ago (but probably right after I got over the "fun" of being carded so I could show I was really over 18 - there, that dates me a bit).

Now if someone was rude - I'm probably having a quiet word with the manager if it's a place I frequent --- on the other hand, I'm imagining the OP maybe not being the sweetest to deal with on the matter (again, if it happened).

Welcome from Ludlow in the UK's Midwest  . My reactions:

1. Lucky you, to be able to buy a pipe tobacco you like over the counter locally, rather than having to drive a 50-mile round trip as I do, if I don't want to buy online (my preferred option, actually).

2. Some people are just in the wrong kind of job.

3. Power fetishism is a perversion common in all walks of life, and the problem starts at the top (that's as political as I'm going to get).

4. If I were going to make an issue of it, next time I'd go in to the store wearing an unobtrusive bodycam and record the whole thing so that I could share it with her employer.

5. Next time, bring whatever your state laws require as valid ID, else just decide there isn't going to be a next time (= f*ck 'em).

6. There seems to be nothing even remotely connected with pipes and tobaccos in these forums that folks aren't able and willing to offer 96 opinions on, mostly useful, and then some. Perhaps you'll stick around and enjoy the wealth of knowledge, wisdom and philosophy that abounds here.

Welcome from Connecticut! Sounds like a power trip. I'm sure the "manager" wasn't there because convenience stores rarely staff more than one person, but I'd ask how to get in touch with the manager. If you have no intention to renewing your DL or getting a state issued ID, talk to the manager and hope that common sense will prevail.
