Hi everyone, I have been smoking a pipe on and off since the mid 90s but in the last month I have really been getting into collecting pipes and sorting through all the available tobacco blends. I have noticed that not all pipes are the same, and I have taken a liking to a Danish Sovereign pipe stamped "311". What does this number mean and is this a Stanwell pipe? I like this pipe because it has a wide bowl and it has a very smooth draw.
Also, I have taken a liking to a bowl of Lane BCA with a top layer of either Dunhill Nightcap or Seattle Pipe Club Plump Pudding.
Cheers,
B

Welcome.
Started pipe collecting, eh? As a wise man once said, "Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny." Or maybe it was a puppet...

Welcome to the forum! The 311 on your pipe refers to the shape of the pipe, each manufacturer has a different system.

I'd love to welcome you to the forum... alas I can not. I'm a very busy, very important, very powerful man and simply don't have the time for such trivialities....
oh wait, a moment has been freed up. Welcome to the forum.

Is this the shape of the pipe you own?

If so, then yes, that shape is the Stanwell "11", designed by Sixten Ivarsson. I suspect the 3 prefix is to differentiate it as a Stanwell second. Many pipe manufacturers do this with their sub-brands.

Danish Sovereign is a Stanwell second, the 2 I have are great smokers and I have not heard anything bad about any of them, the number on it is most likely a shape number
use the links for future research, it's the fun of learning

yes that is the shape of the pipe, I have tried a few different shapes and sizes and that particular pipe suits me. It sits well too, does not roll over like some of my other pipes. I have been watching eBay and I see a few that fit the bill, now I just need to make sure I do not land in the penalty box with the wife, she tends to throw yellow flags down if I spend too much.
It seems that 3 or 4 pipes to go between during the week is a good number, I am sure my collection will grow but I can already tell that I have favorites.
