Welcome to the forum! May your time here be pleasant and full of knowledge. I remember when I first joined a little over a year ago I could barely smoke a pipe all the way to the bottom, but with these guys help I have amassed a collection of more pipes and tobaccos than any one man should rightly have and I enjoy every opportunity I get to smoke my pipe. As many have said, the only dumb question is one that goes unasked, so feel free to give us a shout if youre not sure about something.

I'm really taken by the overwhelming kindness and generosity of the members here. Thank you everybody for the welcomes and offers to help get started. I wish there was some way I could repay everyone's kindness here. Hopefully soon I'll be able to start making accessories such as stands and ash trays and such, once I get some good designs and test out different stains and such. I hope I will be able to contribute to the community the way all of you do.

If anyone here offers to help in any way, odds are there is no reciprocation required. This place is a brotherhood and we help out our own around here. For instance, check your Private Message mailbox here in a minute.

Welcome ! I'd steer clear of the poly bagged tobaccos.loaded with PG. There's a huge variety of good pipe tobacco out there including some of the old OTC standards that are much better.

Welcome aboard, I am still a fairly recent pipe smoker myself, and have found a wealth of information here. This is the best pipe forum on the net, with many well seasoned smokers and skilled repair people.

PG stands for Propylene Glycol. Its a food grade additive that makes tobacco overly goopy and sticky when used in large amounts and is supposed to help preserve shelf life of tobacco. Some American aromatics that are heavily cased are loaded with the stuff.

PG isnt necessarily ALWAYS a bad thing, it will just make tobacco smoke a little hotter than blends that dont have it added in. Some people enjoy some of the heavier cased blends, some dont. Its all just a matter of personal preference. Its good to experiment and see what you like. A lot of Danish aromatics are cased very lightly and smoke a lot cooler than some other aromatics.

It's late but here's a picture of my first pipe. I have to post links because my camera takes stupid large photos and I can't change the settings because the LCD screen is cracked and I can't see what settings I'm changing.

My first pipe was a Grabow Omega too. I still enjoy smoking it and it has seen years of faithful service. The military bit is quite nice and while it is small it still smokes pretty well. I dont smoke it with a filter in it. Didn't do too bad for a first pipe, I'd say.

Nice pipe man!

I believe a Grabow was one of my very firsts. Don't remember too well because when I first started, I didn't stick with pipes for more than a couple months. Details about major lack of resources and knowledge are another story, but I've been smoking for five months this time around, and thanks to this site, and all of the wonderful people here, I've learned how to enjoy this hobby.
