Hello all:

I didn't see an Introductions sub-forum (I think I read that it went away), so I am posting a quick introduction here. I have been enjoying a pipe with regularity for the last three years. My grandpa and uncle were pipe smokers (it was always Borkum Riff, as I recall). I am a dyed-in-the-wool English and Balkan smoker and prefer the heavier, richer blends all year round. I have tried quite a few and have some Virginia and Virginia-based blends, but just can't seem to get on with them. I'll be posting a thread on that.

Today, I am enjoying a bowl of G.L. Pease's Horizons in a Savinelli Punto Oro Classic 616 KS.

Anyway, hello from the mountains of New Mexico.

Someone just turned me on to horizons. I like it very much. A bit finicky for me to get going, but a wonderful blend nonetheless!

It's an enjoyable blend and one I am cellaring. I love the flake presentation, rich, deep color, and of course the mesquite.

I prepare it by cutting up the flake into small pieces, almost cube-cut, if you will, then thoroughly rub that out. This leaves a nice crumble which I let dry for a good while. Then a gravity fill of the bowl, a light tamp, then a hearty charring light. Seems to work well and I don't seem to have to relight unless I put the pipe down. That said, I have a fairly fast cadence, so that keeps it going.
