New Falcon Pipe

My new falcon arrived today standard bent stem with briar bowl and dental bit

smoked half a bowl to start with and just finished a full bowl, I love it, really cool smoke, bowl and metal where the bowl attaches get barely warm, I get full on flavour and it's really easy to clean.

The only question is how long do the dry rings last, or to put it another way do I need to change it before each smoke?

I used a new dry ring every smoke. I never bought the dry rings though, made my own with pipe cleaners.

cheers, I'd do that, got loads of pipe cleaners handy.
Will also try without and compare the experience.

I have used the dry rings a few times, but really don't notice any difference when I don't use them.

Currently smoking a bowl without the ring, apart from a ever so slightly loose draw, the smoke experience is exactly the same.

I think Falcons smoke perfectly with a ring in place. My experience seems to be they smoke hotter and wetter without the ring in place. YMMV.

The problem without the ring is that if you tip the bowl back at all the goo will come down the stem to your mouth.

not so much of an issue with the bent stem

however I think I prefer to have the ring in place.

+1 for pipe cleaners. Falcons are nice to have around and always give a cool dry smoke. I was just in a snowy cold place here in Canada and my little Brentford falcon gave me some of the coolest smokes I've ever had. I grabbed a piece of ice and held it on the metal under the bowl for some extreme frosty puffs haha

Never use the dry rings, just wipe out the humidome after every smoke.

I too use a new ring for each smoke. Very easy to make your own so they cost little to nothing.

I just wrap a pipe cleaner around a bic pen and cut with wire cutters to make my own rings. Cheap as chips and takes mere seconds. I think the smoke is more pleasant if I use a new one for each bowl. YMMV.

I never bother with the rings either. Maybe I should try one to see if there's an appreciable difference.

It's my first falcon, I have to say currently smoking it without the dry ring, I'm starting to like it, the pipe doesn't get overheated and the flavour is awesome.

If you have a straight falcon and tip the pipe above horizontal then the pipe juice that collect in the humidome can run down the stem and make it into your mouth, those little pipe cleaner rings can stop it happening. I figure it's a mistake you only make once, pipe juice is nasty, so rarely bother.

I have the bent stem, so pipe juice running back down the stem isn't an issue, plus I can remove the bowl mid smoke and wipe the humidome out

cotton balls make a better filter. Just fluff up the cotton enough to not restrict air flow. The few times I want a filter it works better then the dry rings.

No Falcons on my rack, but some members have posted photos of whole pipe stables of them in every shape and form with extra bowls at the ready. It appears they may be habit forming.

I have a falcon (or falcon like) pipe that I’ve never smoked somewhere in the garage that I haven’t seen since I moved 4 years ago.
