Looks fine to my eye. The stem will tighten with use, I'd try that before using beeswax (it's best not to introduce any other material between the shank/stem if it can be avoided) The nail/heated tenon is also not a great solution, it leads to a tapered tenon that will "click" into place and may still not fit snugly.

Agreed, all you are doing is 'fattening up' the very end of the tenon and leaving the rest of it loose. Ideally the tenon should be of uniform diameter throughout its length.

My first call was to send back the pipe, but I too would hate to return a gift pipe, especially a up-market pipe from my wife. With the considered comment from Forums members, I think you made a judicious decision. Hope it gives you many years of smoking pleasure. No one here can see the future, but there's a world of experience on the subject on this site.
