Wash it out with a bleach solution of 8oz per gallon. That will kill anything organic. Then fill with fresh, new silica gel. That will absorb any moisture and bleach smell. Alternatively, activated carbon/charcoal will work quite well, but will leave dust behind that might not clean out easily.

What I would do, as a suggested solution, Wash the outside leather with some Kiwi Saddle Soap - follow directions on the can. Wash the inside with a very mild solution of dish soap, dry it with towel and repeat.

Then get some Arango Balkan Supreme and out that in for about half an hour ... that bag will smell like tobacco forever. You can skip the Balkan Supreme if you want. Fabreze air freshener is made to eliminate odors by the way ... you can spray it in wait a bit then wipe it out ... no more smell.

I used to use a large, freshly opened can of ground coffee to suck the smell of decomposing stiffs out of a room. Those reeks would adhere to your nose hairs and such, affecting your smeller for days. Worked on freshly burned corpses also. Might try a handful in your new pouch.

Might the mustiness be organic? If so have you considered sticking it into the freezer (with the usual protection from damage) and treating it the same way folks do to get rid of odors from sneakers/leather shoes?

So far: yea bag in over night, turned inside out and hung on the washing line for the day; I’ll see where I am after that, but I’m not keen on using any chemicals, so Febreeze will be a last resort I think.

I would of just returned it, rather then messing with it, especially if this doesn’t come out, and always leaves a stench.

As a consumer with a new product, it should smell nice, like leather is all, and not something you should have to deal with.

I think the inner pouch might actually be made of latex or something similar; after a few days with coffee beans in it the silica smell has settled down and now I’m left with medical scent of French letters…great! 😂
