Damn, tell him that he’ll look like a dick if he smokes a cob, then tell him to pick up a Falcon….that’s cruel.
You’ve got to be cruel to be kind!
Like myself, the OP is a handsome young man. As such, he’ll do more ‘rogering’ with a falcon.

It’s different in the states I’m sure, but here on these islands, no one ever got laid smoking a cob!

Obviously, doesn’t matter what you smoke in whatever pipe you want. It’s all good. Hopefully though, in time you’ll get to enjoy the wonderful flakes & plugs we have over here. When you do, you’ll find them better suited to pipes like Falcons & Petersons System pipes. They’ll outlast & outperform a cob in every, single way.
As you’re a beginner, it would of been remiss of me not to tell you that.
Hope you enjoy everything & stick at it.👍

Briars are a very dense wood, naturally it's going to take more to light briar and keep it lit!

If i were you I'd stick to smoking tobacco, pack it a bit lighter than you think and dry it more than you think you should, then adjust from there.

As many already alluded to, I’m almost positive you’re packing too tight. Once you realize how light the pipe actually needs to be packed, and how gentle you need to puff to keep it lit, a whole new world opens up.

The purpose of pipe smoking is enjoyment. Or one would use a NIC patch.

If you enjoy cobs - enjoy them. Don't let the resident grouches tell you what to enjoy!

That's a politicians job

Joking aside, if you’re starting out & seriously want to give pipesmoking a fair go, here’s what you need:
A Falcon Pipe (one bantam Algiers & one standard billiard bowl).
A Peterson ‘system’ pipe.
A Parker London Briar (£29.99 from mysmokingshop).
Lots of matches & a bit of patience, it takes time for everyone & there’s no rush at the end of the day. Take your time & enjoy it, you’ll get there.

Tobacco wise, British is best. Everything else is overhyped & underwhelming. Grab a plug of yachtsman & condor from fox’s in Dublin if you can…..probably won’t be around for much longer.
I thought you said "joking aside"... what follows is hilarious! rotf

To the OP, as others have noted, pack your briar a little looser. What kind of pipe is it? Ensure it doesn't have an obstruction in the airway.
Mostly though, smoke whatever makes you happy my friend.
