My brother has been having a bit of work/life related stress lately. Walter is not his real name but he reminds me a lot of "Walter" from the movie The Big Lebowski. A very unique character to say the least. Like me, he gets the "wintertime depression". I am not sure of the clinical term for it. Anyway, I have suggested one of my favorite stress reducing and relaxation techniques of tobacco pipe smoking. He agreed to give it a go over Thanksgiving when we meet up again. I am just not sure what to start him off with. When I came back to the pipe in June, I went heavy on the English, but as I learned and developed a much improved smoking technique, I am smoking VA/Vapers 90% of the time with great satisfaction. I have some quality Aro's(Boswell/Newminster) as well that I hardly touch but enjoy from time to time.
I want him to have the "ah ha!" feeling that comes with Virginias but don't know if that is what I should pack for his first bowl. The VA feeling surely does take some time to develop. So, what do ya all think?

"Winter time depression" is also known as cabin fever. People get it a lot because it's too damn cold to go outside and do anything. Plus, almost all the gardening plants and lawn have died off so there's little left to tend. As I'm no Dr. Phil, I wouldn't be able to prescribe any solution for this problem.
As for a first time smoke I'd say go with the 1Q. Even a lot of English smokers will grab for it now and then.

I usually recommend Dunhill 965 as a good starter tobacco. It has good flavor without being too strong and it has a nice room note as well. Being a medium English, it gives you a launch pad for stronger blends as well.

Has he got any other tobacco experience? Cigars? It is so hard to tell - what will knock one guy's socks off will make another go "meh".
I haven't smoked 1Q, but I have never heard that it gives you a "wow" experience - I gather it is a good all day blend, but those bends are usually not "wow" blends.

I don't care for 965,so I can't recommend that.

He has limited smoking experience. Maybe smoked a few camels when offered from time to time. He chews tobacco regularly. I just know from my previous experience Captain Black White was my favorite in the distant past. Then I stopped by the B&M in downtown Cincy in June and bought a tin of 1792 and Nightcap then my whole world changed. I packed some Nightcap in an old Dr. Grabow Grand Duke for the drive back to the hotel and the rest is history. That's just my exp. I want his first pipe smoking experience to be as rewarding as it can possibly be.
I haven't tried 1Q but will pick up some of that. I have EMP and 965 tins. We may have to try a few things and see what he likes. Thanks guys!
Feel free to keep suggestions coming and thanks again! :puffy:

Solani Festival is one of the best aromatics I have had this year. A fellow member gifted me a bowl or three and I soon ordered more .

Honestly my second go at pipe smoking was with a match for EMP and it made me a lifelong pipesmoker. It's light enough but has lots of flavor nd doesn't bite in my experience. I think that would be a great first blend. Still haven't popped any of the tins you gave me but that will probably be the first one :)

I second the EMP. After a couple of bowls I ended up ordering 4 more tins. That and NightCap. I can't deny 1Q either as that is in my regular lineup as well.
