Hey Dervis, not sure if you made a purchase yet, but there's a very nice Dress Dunhill on eBay right now. I'm not sure what the guy's reserve is, but if it's anything like his Buy It Now price, it may be a little too high. But it does look like a nice Dress billiard
HERE

By the way, a Peterson Ebony is a nice alternative to a Dunhill, and those are always available here & there

For well below your budget, you could get a L'anatra Pettinate, which to me, just oozes class and elegance, and yet sets itself apart from the usual dress pipe (which is usually a glossy black--something I'm afraid I would scratch within two seconds). To me, it has the right mix of elegance and masculine ruggedness, something that's not all that easy to combine:

This one is from smokingpipes. I am neither affiliated with smokingpipes or L'anatra, and I have yet to own a Pettinate but, let's just say it's on my short list. Whenever life gets me down, I like to look at these and drool. Now, if I could only find some fancy events to get invited to...
Good luck! and please be sure to post a pic of whichever dress pipe you choose.

Using this thread for opinions about "formal pipes".

What did you buy in the end?

My 2 cents about pipe for formal occasions, or what I do: Color is not as important as shape. All straight smooth billiards are "classy", because they are classic. You bring the image of Faulkner, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Bing Crosby, Errol Flynn. The epitome of men elegance used straight billiard or canadian.

For your dinners, they have also other advantages: The pipe fits well in the inside pocket of the suit jacket (actually, if it has a pen pocket it's perfect). Another thing it's that you cannot expect to do a 1 hour pipe, even if they smoke. So a small bowl like the ones in billiards is just perfect.

About the tobacco, I use a silver box for business cards with some flakes in it.
