I was thinking of joining NASPC (North American Society of Pipe Collectors) so I could head out to Columbus for the annual show. Does anyone here belong to it? I noticed on the website it says being a member gives you a chance to go. Is it difficult for new members to go to this? Any info would be awesome. Thanks

I'm a member as well. I've not been able to attend their shows but

I enjoy reading the Pipe Collector, as well as submitting articles for

publication in this newsletter. They have an impressive list of members

from all over, which can be a good resource of information & you get

club discounts from some of the vendors with your membership. Good stuff.

I am a member and I recommend that every pipe smoker join NASPC. I don't think that you have to be a member to go to the show. I think that it is open to the public, but it is still worth it to join.

I joined on October 24th of last year. This was my first time joining, and about a week later, I received a stack of "The Pipe Collector" which was a great magazine. However, I will NOT be rejoining, since my membership expired at the end of December. I'm still a bit ticked off that with only 2 months left in the year when I joined, my membership expired. If anything, someone at NASPC should have advised that all memberships start at the beginning of the year and I would have waited.

I think that is why you got 'The Pipe Collector' for the whole year, the stack of mags rather than the last one of the year. You would have gained nothing further by waiting. That's basically what membership is, a magazine several times a year so not matter when you join you get the full year's mags.

staffwalker I have to disagree. I currently, and have for many years, subscribe to Smithsonian. The subscription starts every November; I did not receive 11 back issues when I first joined, I received 1 issue and my subsription ended 1 year later. If that is how NASPC conducts their memberships, to start on January 1, they should prorate membership fees from the month that you join. To pay $18 for a 2 month membership is excessive to me.
I would hate to subscribe to Sports Illustrated the last week in October and receive 47 back issues and have to re up on January 1. Subscriptions/Memberships should expire 1 year from when you sign up.

mowens, to answer your original question, the NASPC show in August is free and open to the public. You do NOT need to be a NASPC member to attend. It's a great show, with usually about 80 to 100 tables of great stuff.
I've been a member for several years and do enjoy the newsletter. Which reminds me, I don't think I've paid my dues for 2011 yet.

Van thanks for the info. I joined anyway because I do enjoy clubs like NASPC and I wanted to show my support, I also enjoy the mag they send as well. I live in Northern Va so Ohio wouldn't be too crazy of a drive. Have you been to the show?

Bob and I always pay our dues in person at the Richmond Show.
Even though the NASPC Show in Columbus is free, if I went, I think it would be nice to support them by joining up. The newsletter has a lot of good info and discussions too.

Nice! I had no idea there was a show in Richmond. It's only about a 90 minute drive from my house. Perhaps I will see you guys there this year.

I am really surprised that the NASPC is not a member of the UPCA. You would thing that group would have been one of the first to join.

I am a member of the NASPC, I joined about 4 months ago. I already have the most recent 3 Pipe Collectors magazines.
We need some shows down here in Tampa, Kevin. Hint, Hint.
I agree, there are no shows close to us at all here in Tampa. I am going to try and make the Chicago show next year, but it will be tied in with something else for me.
