Mystery Shilling Dunhill

If there was any question as to whether the big companies ( Dunhill, Peterson, Savinelli ) give a crap, there it is!
Glad you were able to shed some light ( a lot of it ) and seems I was pretty much "on cue" .....

A long while back I sent JTCooke a question about an early pipe of his. He wouldn't respond until a put a 50% deposit down on a commission and even then it was like drawing water from a stone.

This is an HT from the late 1990's, the rings give a clue to the name "shilling".

Lovely pipe. Was that about the time the shilling as currency went bye-bye? That's a question in earnest, as it's important to be so.

Are those two digits, or two stars? (it's hard to tell).
I've bought several pipes from Rodridgo, never an issue but I do wish that he would post larger photos and a detail shot of the nomenclature on his ads.
I love the Shilling finish,but didn't realize that they were handturned. That is a beauty and it looks like you did well on that purchase.

Looking back at the photos Nate posted, I see no resemblance to a stack of shillings (or any coins) on that (lovely) pipe. Wonder what gives?
Nate- You still have it and how's it smoke?

Both pipes shown here are beautiful but I particularly like that shilling. I've wanted one for some time.
Jpmcwjf - decimalisation in the UK came in 1971 and shillings became redundant. They were worth 12 old pence - 5 pence in current tender. I remember them well and with great fondness as that was my weekly pocket money. You could buy 4 sweets for a penny, so as a 7 year old I could go to the shop with my granddad and buy a bag of nearly 50 chewy delights!

I don't believe they were all hand turned (I don't think the OP's pipe was so marked) I was able to pick this out at a pipe show in 2000. I picked 2 HT's, the above horn and an enormous Shell, Danish Style Freehand XL, rare for Dunhill. In fact it's the only Dunhill I have seen with all the stampings on the silver band, none on the wood.....

Then again after reading Dunhills reply to Nate, I guess they were all stamped HT or HT XL....

That freehand of yours would have to be hand turned, right? (but perhaps not stamped that way)

Yes, I noted that is an HT XL, marked on the silver mount.

I didnt pick that up, makes sense. I recall seeing a Dunhill only stamped on the silver, but can't recall where (probably here somewhere).

Now that I think of it I also have seen another one, probably a military mount....
I was just doing some research on Shillings and found that some pictures of my pipe must have been lifted from another website years ago and put into the pipephil.eu Dunhill database to illustrate Shillings...http://www.pipephil.eu/logos/en/dunhill/others1.html#shil99
So, when you look up Shilling in the dictionary, there's a picture of my pipe...
