At age 4 or 5, it's the parents' fault, unless the kid is chemically unbalanced, a real possibility. But the mother's reaction is wholly unsupportable.

Striking the child could carry horrific consequences for the bitee, not that one isn't tempted.

@jazz: Holy crap...that's rather disturbing. I wonder what else that psycho has done since being let loose so quickly. Statistically women are given much more lenient sentences than men for the same crimes (just another example of "male privilege" I guess).
I have wondered about what she got up to when released. I have no doubt the savage cavewoman was picked up for another similar incident or worse. I have also pondered that had it been I convicted of said crime I would have had at least 4 years probably more with no criminal history. The other thing I never mentioned about her insulting sentence was she actually absconded from bail twice for that crime before she was convicted.
I met with the Detective in charge of my case after her conviction and felt for the poor sod. He was truly embarrassed at the sentence. I had to assure him that I understood it was not his fault. I mean after all, we had DNA from where she bit not just my nose but my neck and clothes. A pub full of witnesses, CCTV camera footage, a guilty plea and 2 breaks in bail conditions and all they could muster was 9 months to serve half. It still gives me a lump in my throat when I think about it now and it happened in 2009.
The worst part of the whole experience was waiting for my blood results. There was a period of time when I was unsure if the dirty drug witch had infected me with something nasty.

You guys miss the point, while on Special Duty to the Navy they flew me to New Orleans from S Asia straight to Bayou Vista where the Swift Boats were being modified, I passed on my Critique and was due to fly back the same day, my Uncle lived a few miles from there and I made a quick family visit. My Uncles little daughter , about 4 crept up to the sofa I was sitting on, drinking coffee and bite me on the leg. I put my coffee down, raised my Blues up and she had broke the skin, many laughs and chuckles from family members. I grabbed the kid and bit the shit out of her arm, crying she ran away to the horror of the family. Not so my Uncle he stood up and said Thank you I've waited a while for that to happen. Moral, she never bit another person.

WOW! I would have been worried as hell.

Believe me, that thought entered my mind.

Tslex, come visit Alabama. Spanking and striking kids is our favorite sport. At Walmart, we line up to smack around whiny brats. And, as a parent, we are obligated to beat down other people's children also. And, we thank each other for doing this. None of this mamby pamby, "don't hurt my child..." No, parents like that just get struck down as well. We are not a state for the weak spirited.

So. . . spankings are just not a thing anymore? Is that it?
Spankings are considered physical abuse by the court system, and scolding is emotional abuse. I showed my oldest daughter how to field dress a deer a few years ago, and had social services up my ass for traumatizing her.

Damn! But that's what we've become. So your own daughter turned you in?

Very few states do that. The majority of states have laws that read that as long as you do not leave visible marks it is not abuse. And, I take it that since DHR did not remove the child that it was not against the law to field dress a deer with a child.
My neighbor had an issue with the school and DHR about a child that was traumatized that his father was going to "beat" him for some trouble at school. The counselor at the school called DHR that sent the kid home with a patrolman. The little shit thought that he was getting away with something. And, after the kid confessed, the father looked at the officer and asked why he was there. The officer said to make sure that this was dealt with properly. Kid had a big schiteating grin. Father asked the officer if by "properly," he was to use a belt, and the officer smiled and said, "absolutely."
There are huge misconceptions about what the law is on abuse and discipline. We only have a few states that actually have a guideline that restricts a parent beyond what I would think of as normal discipline.

She was excited about it, and when telling her friends about it, it apparently offended a teacher.

Incredible...gotta be a government school. There are countless such stories out there that I've heard and read over the years. I don't know which is more despicable...the teacher calling "social services" for such a BS reason, or the SS goons actually responding to it and harassing you and your family over it.

deathmetal - for some reason my 'puter cannot play the video.
Frank, you do live an interesting life. Too bad you didn't have a bowl of chili beans a half an hour or so before your encounter with Hannibal the Cannibal.
UPDATE: The manager of the store, a friend of mine, called me and said that woman and her child were in the store again, and the brat had a meltdown. Mommy had to drag little Chucky out the door as he was kicking and screaming.

The one and only time my son, now 30, then around 3 or 4, had a tantrum it was also in a supermarket. He got down on the floor of the aisle and wailed and thrashed for nearly a minute, while I walked away about 30 feet, and turned my back. It stopped, and thanks be, never again. Oh, at home he bit me once and I bit him back, also never again. His mother was apoplectic that I did so. She sued for divorce.
