Granger is inspiring me to re-try the other big codger/otc blends. I never expected to like it as much as I do. I do think there's a bit of an added topping though, I'm not sure what it is but the burley shines with it and it's slight.

Lane RR and Velvet are more winners for me. On the list still to try is: Half & Half, SWR, PA (if I can find it), Carter Hall, and Sutliff RR match.

Normabob,
I once thought Carter Hall to be the end of the rainbow and I still smoke it. Prince Albert too. Granger for me is fuller, creamier, lightly sweet, (berry note) nutty Burley. The sidestream upon lighting is heaven and the flavor is consistent for the entire smoke. I like the rough cut.

The OP said it was like smoking a cigarette. Many OTC’s pulled double duty as Roll Your Own but not Granger; It was marketed as pipe tobacco. Hence it’s cut.

I think if you like Granger, you will also like SWR. You may even prefer SWR. The cut and appearance is nearly identical. I think them the same base blend with different topping.

Obviously you enjoy Burley. By all means explore the other OTC’s. Hope you find your favorite.

I just chuckled at you calling him normabob.

Hmm I thought it was in the Pipe Manuel, that every man had to have Burley in their rotation, to smoke away the Pipe Ghosts! ??

It's a good blend. The difference between wet and dry is like night and day like mso mentioned Can totally change a blend. Also, smoke through a few bowls, then you can gauge if you like the blend..

Burley hates me. It throws bitterness at every puff. But Granger for whatever reason agrees with me and is a nice smooth smoke if slowly sipped and if I am in a patient mood. For flyfishing a large stream by myself in the middle of 5000 acres, it is sublime. And sitting by the fire, listening to the owls, trout sizzling in the skillet with a little olive oil and cubed potatoes, wondering if the bears will leave my food alone tonight, it is the absolute bomb. And it goes very well with a good Irish Whiskey such as Green Spot.
