Ok folks, I got in my big order and have tried the following, in addition to the Red Ribbon :
Capstan Blue Flake !! Big thumbs up. Loved it. Great choice in VA Flake.

MacBaren VA No1 ! Jury is still out on this. Loved the flavor. A little "bitey" but it didn't bite me. I can see where it could.

McClelland's Red Cake 5100 ! Liked this tobacco. Very good choice. It's sort of a toss up between the Red Ribbon and this... similar to my tastes but I've got to do some more tasting.... an enjoyable process. :)
Still to try:

Capstan Yellow Flake

F&T's BlackJack

I think there is another in my box... maybe even two more that I can't remember. I'm looking forward to this process. It's one of the many blessings of pipe smoking. :)

Rapidly changing taste in tobacco is a reason not to go whole hog in ordering quantities of a blend. I can

understand hoarding leaf against tobacco tax increases and prices rising otherwise, and that's one tactic.

But for the daily rotation, changing tobaccos and trying tobaccos regularly is part of the adventure. If you

sample a lot, you'll know what you're doing when you order a pound. I'm still a little amazed at the idea of

a five-pound order, but I guess those are for folks who smoke many bowls a day.

The other tobacco in my order was Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired. I just finished a bowl. At first it didn't appeal to me but toward the bottom of the bowl, it got really good. I dried it out, like I do my Vir. Flakes, is that something I should do with ODF? At any rate, I gotta smoke more of it. I know it's not a pure Vir., but always wanted to try it. I'm not a Burley fan and it does have some in it. Jury is still out for me on this one.

I am currently smoking a bowl of F&T Blackjack. I'm impressed at the start. I think it could be a keeper. :)

MacBaren Virginia No. 1 ready rubbed. I like to change my smoke with almost every bowl. That's why I have a large(too large?)collection of blends with few duplicates.

I'm also a fan of McCranie's Red Ribbon. I picked up a tin for the first time at the TAPS Show in Raleigh back in April and have thoroughly enjoyed it.

Red Ribbon is one of the finest Virginias going,IMO. It is a single crop tobacco - thus the date. The current iteration is the 4th version - 1983, 1996, 2000, 2008. I have smoked and/or have in my cellar the latter 3. Probably smoked 20 tins of it - I am not primarily a Virginia smoker, and keep several in rotation -and probably have at least 20 more in my cellar.
The fact that it is a single crop means that the different iterations do not taste exactly the same. When one year's batch is gone, you get the next one. It will be similar, but not the same.

It's available in ready rubbed and flake. No, you can't get it bulk, and no, you can't get it cheaper elsewhere. You buy it from McCranie's. That's just the way it is.
It's tinned by McClelland; the smell you get on opening is fermenting tobacco. It is similar to their 5100, but 5100 is not a single crop.

Great info, Jud ! I have just found Red Ribbon and will find more of it. :) Thanks to Cosmos for directing me to it. Looking forward to settling in with quite a few bowls of it this weekend. :)

A month ago this tin of 965 arrived along with London Mixture - my first two English/Latakia tobaccos. I couldn't stand the tin note or the smoke. A week later Frog Morton Cellar arrived and I decided maybe Latakia isn't so bad. Within a week of that Cellar was my favorite, and London Mixture tasted pretty good. I just finished smoking a bowl of 965 - and for the life of me I can't understand what I didn't like about it a month ago. If anything, perhaps it isn't strong enough.
The more I smoke (a few months into smoking a pipe), the less I prefer aromatics and the more I prefer Virginias and Latakia. And the more mild tobaccos that I enjoyed a month ago now don't have the flavor or aroma richness that I want.
I just placed another order this morning for a few more heavy duty Virginia Kakes and some Irish Flake. Along with another Peterson P-lip - this time a 999.

I started on captain black and wanted sweet sweet sweet... Really took a liking to tinder boxes chartwell.... But now I find myself hating all my old favorites. I ordered a custom pipe from David jones and he's shipping it Monday.... I bought all kinds of new tobaccos like bully's and virginia flakes and of course some aro's and damnit the aro's aren't cutting it anymore! Surprisingly I think I'm going to start smoking Prince Albert out of it but not before I get some more suggestions.... Haven't had anything with Latakia or perique

andya27, you spurred me to pull out my Frog Morton OTT and wow, it tasted soooo good, so I smoked a couple of pipe fulls of it yesterday, back to the Virginia's today, but FM never tasted better. I think we need to bump around some to clear our taste buds. The FM Cellar is a little sweet for me, but I'm gonna go back and try some of that this week. I bet it's gonna taste good too. LOL

rickcrum, I don't know that I've ever smoke PA. I might have to pick up a package sometime just to try it.

Sparks, Burley has always given me tongue burn and never have gotten into the flavor because of that. I know a lot of Burley smokers and I seem to be the only one that gets bit by it? Weird but may be a chemical thing. PA is cheap, I will definitely try a little to see what happens. Stranger things have happened. :)

Sparks, what is a good, mild burley to try? I'm open to giving it a try.

Wow, that is awesome, Sparks ! Yes, I will drop you a PM, would love to try the Epiphany blend. I'm open to anything and I don't smoke mild tobaccos that often either, but always looking for something different. Right now I'm really enjoying the McCranie's Red Ribbon. It is just great. That said, I jumped back to Frog OTT for a night and really, really enjoyed it.

I've tried Carter Hall and it's ok, but really didn't do anything for me. It might be that I will go back to it and it will be awesome at some point but it's not calling me back at this time. :)

PM will follow. Thanks again !!! God bless you.
