I'm not one for giving attaboys just for participation, but that's a really impressive second pipe. You're right about the stem-shank junction, but I wonder if having a belt sander would help in that regard. I hope you keep at it -- you clearly have a talent for shaping the briar.

Amazing work on the brim; the grain on the bowl is lavish. It's a real beauty. What kindness to bestow this amazing pipe on your friend after his awful work place accident. This will go a long way toward boosting his morale and healing. Not good when you work with your hands and have them so severely injured. I kinda hope you can move from meat cutting to pipe making, although crafting pipes is not an easy profession to enter for making a living. Still, for only your second pipe, this is one hell of an audition.

Thank you so much everyone for the kind words. Watching a pipe come into existence from a plain block of wood, from your own hands is rewarding to say the least. Seeing someone else take that pipe in their own hands and caress the smoothness of it, and turn it over and over in their hands, admiring and cherishing it is rewarding to the extreme.
Mso... it is definitely something I would like to pursue as a profession when I'm able to get my hands on better equipment. Shaping a pipe by hand with files and rasps, although again rewarding, is time consuming. At some point in the future, I plan on at least getting my hands on a belt or disk sander, and perhaps a small lathe as well.

Yes sir! :) Thank you, Shikano. It was indeed only my second pipe. Part of me wishes I had kept it. But the guy who has it now is very pleased with it and it's become a favorite of his. And that is a rewarding feeling. I was just talking with him yesterday as he happened to be smoking it. It's good to know he's enjoying it. :) I should be starting a third soon, but I don't get to keep that one either haha. It's been claimed by my brother in law. He's bound and determined to pay for it, but I can't let him pay for it. He's been a great husband to my little sister, a huge help to my father after my father's heart attack, and a veteran. He's earned a pipe. Besides... I won't feel right charging for a pipe until I've gotten a few more under my belt.

I didn't mention the birdseye and the plateau. I've never seen plateau crafted into a kind of paisley like that.
