Brasso is a product that is used in the polishing of metal.

Generally, those that use it are members or former members of the military.

I have found a product that is not as "messy", it is called "Duraglit" and works wonders.

Where Brasso is liquid, Duraglit is a cotton type wadding that is impregnated with a polishing compound, and is dry. It works very well; as-well.

They are easy to find on the web.

I'm s/a-ing my Stanwell and one of my Savinellis. I noticed a slight nasty taste from them and this will reset and refresh the pipes.
A shame we don't have brasso here, my Peterson Squire could use a silver polish on the band.

My personal opinion would be try swabbing the pipes out with a bristle pipe cleaner dipped in a pipe sweetener or a high proof alcohol first. The salt treatment would be my last resort. Any silver polish will clean up the silver band on your Peterson. Just be careful about getting it on the finish.

But the S/A doesn't really hurt the pipe as such, does it? Yesterday I removed the salty nicotine cr*p and now they both smell nice and fresh.
Stupid question: Can you put the stem in a dishwasher?

Bleach works better Juni and you don't even need to put it in the washing machine! :>)
I can't speak for him, but I suspect Uncle was suggesting conservative medicine to see if it works.
I've found that when a pipe starts to taste a bit sour quick cleaning with Evercelar like Bob shows in his video and a light wiping of the chamber with a paper towel just dampened with the booze, leaves them pretty fresh and neutral.
I do S/A Ebay pipes though. I know where my pipes have been. But I feel better dropping the nuke on someone else's mess.

I do use very strong vodka for inside the stem and the shank and it works pretty well.

The outsides of the stems are just fine, but I did restore an old pipe of mine which had a nasty brown stem by using a very soft sandpaper - filing it down a little litte bit. I never got the nice new-stem shine though (I used a little bit of beeswax).

Tripoli on a wheel or very fine sand paper will bring back the shine. But it's gotta be really really fine. Like 1000 grit and then 2000 like car painters use.

Automotive rubbing compound or valve lapping compound. Very mild abrasives will restore the shine on that stem. Jonesing was right about me recommending a milder treatment before doing the salt. It has been known on rare occasions to crack the bowl.
