Why did you bury the Peterson like a holy relic The stain was falling off the pipe .

Never bury a pipe like that fill the bowl only and plug the mortise with a q tip. Use ever clear or a 151 for alcohol. I'm sorry if it seems like I'm scolding you but your scareing me

I buried trying a new method. Actually i got the idea from this guy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPayWdDtW6s&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK3SOxBu35k&feature=related
And i thought his idea in burying it in iodized salt and using kosher salt is a good idea. There is soooo much dye in this thing that this may be my first and last purchase on peterson pipes.
Thanks pipemaker for making some recommendations--if it scares you then it raises some red flags for me.
Using 151 proof Rum i tried plugging it but hmmm ill try something else.

You tube is a BAD source to rely on! This guy has NO idea what he is doing. Right now I have a box of about a hundred restored pipes that I have done to sell off. They were the extras I got while dealing on the good ones I wanted on ebay.
Why in the world would you want to remove the stain from a Peterson? I recently refinished one made between 1938 and 1941 without going through the mess this fellow is recommending. I have an article about ready on pipe restoration for this magazine. Watch for it .

the stain seems to distort the flavor of my smokes and that 2 other videos do complain that petersons have stain in the bowl making the smoking experience cheap or lacking there of. But i will take your word for it and remove the salt now and clean it right away.
thankyou

S/A outside the bowl?? There goes the nice finish :(. The stain inside the bowl will vanish after 10 or so bowls. The Peterson site has good instructions on how to break in a pipe.

Peterson come nre with a blackened bowl. Some makers do this some don't. I suppose there could be stain under the blackening if Peterson decided to dunk them during staining. I doubt it though.
The thing is Shoto it seems to me that if one is removing stain from the inside of the bowl then your removing it from the outside too and that's supposed to be there.
I watched the other guy's videos. I see what he's thinking but Im not sure it's right. That old pipe might be dirty on the outside but it's not likely from smoking it (handling excluded of course). Briar is pretty dense and I don't think gunk from the bowl would leach through those thick bowl walls.
Oh and on the stem when it comes out of the bleach a good buffing with tripoli or a light light sanding with extreme high grit sandpaper like 1000 grit or higher (get it at auto Parts stores by the body work stuff) will make it shiny again.
Good luck bortha I hope the finish on that Pete is OK.

OH OF COURSE NOT GOD FORBID doing a S/A outside the bowl--im just lacking the plug and thinking what if osmosis can flow outside and hit the salt. Worry no more im cleaning it and i think it looks fine now--no damages now going to use extra olive oil treatment for the briar.
THANKS For the tips you guys

I'm not sure If I know what you mean by blackened bowl? Do you mean the pre-carb bowl? Reason I ask I haven't owned a Peterson yet with the pre-carb bowl. Now they are known for adding a some sort of stained coat in the bowl but like already said it smokes out within for me the first few bowls. I have only had great experience with Peterson's and pretty much swear by them. Also a BIG thing your suppose to never do is put alcohol on the pipe its self because it WILL strip the finish off.

I've had 3 new Pete's in my hot little hands in the last few months and they all had a black treatment of some kind in the chamber.

Kind of makes me wonder what sort of simple ear piercing advice he misunderstood.
Shotokun, I applaud your effort. It'll be nice to see how things work for you with an update.

Agree Dudley. Like anything you gotta sort the ponies out from under the piles of poop.
Duninthedan does a pretty nice job with youtube vids. http://www.youtube.com/user/dubinthedam But i don't agree with everything he says either. Piepfriend's vids are just a bit odd what with the ska or whatever playing in the background.
Great way to learn and share though. Shoto you smoking that Pete yet?
I have and old ebay Edwards taking a bath as we speak. I had quite good luck with 2 of the 3 ebay junnkers I bought. It's fun to bring them back to life.
