The feeling of having your space violated like that really sucks, not to mention the windows. I’m sorry to hear that man. That’s hilarious that thousands of dollars worth of pipes were just cast aside. It is a universal thing that people unfamiliar with pipes just think they’re $20 bucks or so. I have friends and family that are astonished at the $90-$100 price tag on Savinellis. Funnily enough most people seem to understand that meerschaum pipes tend to be expensive and aren’t surprised to hear they usually cost at least $100.

Extra funny:

Even when they learn that some pipes are worth a lot of money---and break into someone's house to steal them---they don't realize that they are as unique and identifiable as fingerprints.

Just ask that State Trooper in Indiana who was inside Basil Sullivan's house on other business, was fascinated by the pipes on display and did his homework regarding their value afterward, then returned to break in and steal them a few weeks later.

He got caught trying to sell them, not knowing his "merch" was one-of-a-kind and traceable.

Actually did some prison time.

Unknown to me and a few years ago there were a couple kids in the area breaking into cars for iPods, phones and cash. I left my pickup unlocked by mistake one night and next morning my iPod and cord were gone along with a bit of cash that was also sitting out. Sitting on the backseat in a bag was my Nikon DSLR with a couple of nice lenses, lol. Was glad to be spared a broken window and relieved at being the victim of dummies.
that kind of theft is about immediate turn over. I want something now!!!! Not in a few days.

I have been working with a printmaking cooperative in Birmingham for a few months now. I had been missing 2D work and design since college, so I was very happy to find this group... and it turns out that I know most the artists there. Anyways, last weekend, I was working late on the press... like 8PM. It isn't in a bad part of town, lots of bars and galleries around. So, I felt safe. But, when I went back out to my truck, the windows were busted out and my stuff was riffled through. I assessed my stuff as I was putting everything back in order, and my pipe bag had been dumped out, with twelve pipes and jars of tobacco were all over the backseat. These were Beckers, Dunhills, Eltangs, Ardors, Tinskys, etc... All of the pipes were there, just missing $7 in cash that was in the pipe bag. Even my silver tamps were all accounted for. They probably thought it was a purse... a very cool masculine purse, ha ha.

When the officer asked me what was missing, I told him that I was surprised that none of the pipes were missing, just the cash I keep for road tolls and snacks. The officer looked at my pipe and said that they couldn't possibly be used to smoke crack and was too big for pot paraphernalia. So, they were of no use to a thief. He said, "besides, pipes don't have any value." I just agreed, ha ha. No pint in tempting the officer into thinking that they did have value. It's best that the world just thinks these things are bought at drug stores for a few bucks. It makes the world safer, h aha.

The major loss were the windows which cost me $268 a piece. Two had to be replaced.

Anyways, thank God the pipes were not taken, not a single one was cheap enough that I would have just shrugged. I would have had to go all John Wick to get it back. Anyways, I am sure the thief was disappointed in my belongings.

The policeman just chuckled, "I'm trying to imagine a crackhead smoking rock out of one of those pipes."

The worst of it was having to drive home with no side windows and setting in a pile of glass.

Anyways... so is the way of the world.
I'm very sorry to hear that his happened, but glad that it wasn't worse. Because car break-ins had increased in my former neighborhood in recent years i made it a point not to leave anything in my car. Didn't used to be that way, but that's then and now is now.

Fkin dirtbags.
Glad your pipes are ok.

I’ll not delve into my opinions on the current state of our society, beyond the police are an investigative, post event system. Non-prosecution of non-violent crime is a systemic problem in the current US justice system, as the criminals are only emboldened by such practices.

20 years ago, I would probably have been rather scary to face. The two times someone attempted to mug me, I got the best of them. But nowadays, my dog is the more terrifying of the two of us, especially when her German Shepherd side curls those lips back to reveal those primitive teeth, and her Great Dane size, ha ha.
Hell, when we get to playing to the point that she gets really frisky, she can scare me, ha ha.
Glad you are okay. Your wife is correct about the dog. 100 lbs of snarling shepherd would certainly get the thief's attention. Made me wonder if my two new Basset Hound pups would produce the same effect...they could probably trip the bad guy

I guess you mean that I should bring my truck into the studio with me? I am not sure what you mean, either. How did parking my truck in a parkinglot and not catching them in the act, equate “allowing” this?
I’d venture @georged is referring to the collective “we”, and everything from so many kids being raised with no values, to society always making more laws without enforcing the basic ones we’ve had all along.

Liars, cheaters, and thieves suck.

That makes more sense. My misunderstanding. But, still the problem is catching them. The police were at my truck within a couple of minutes when I called, so I can't blame them.
I do not understand what the alarm on my truck is for if this didn't set it off. Breaking the window should be the first thing that triggers it. I would have heard it if it had went off.

Having my dog with me at least gives me an animal with a 6th sense of someone messing with what she knows is her ride. My weapon and her teeth will have to be the retribution if it happens again.

Remember the old biker alarms?-they didn’t set off a klaxon, just sent the owner a page with any vibration of significance so they could take care of business.

And that's who we keep picking for leaders in just about every field. People just don't seem to demonstrate a talent at discerning BS, or maybe don't just either don't care about lying, cheating and thieving, or harbor some admiration for it, or support lying cheating and thieving. Certainly, by most measures, a sizable percentage of the population actively engage in lying and cheating, whether it's college papers, resumés, or marriages or what have you.

Why would civilization improve when it's built on a foundation and pillars of quicksand?
