Obviously slowing down is key. But, some pipes just smoke hot. Some smoke hot at specific areas in the bowl. Also, as you build more cake it may help the pipe smoke cooler. And oh yes, slow down.
I've run into the same problem on occasion and often find that it has a lot to do with me not taking the time to smoke slowly and I find certain blends seem to smoke hotter than others. I like to smoke Virginia and Burley blends and I've found that some Virginia blends tend to smoke hotter than other blends (some of it may have to do with the moisture content of the blend). I've started literally "sipping" or "breathing" the pipe and I find that this helps in keeping the pipe from getting too hot. Also, if you find that the bowl is getting a little too warm to the touch, this is a way for your pipe to give you some feedback that you need to slow down and as others have said perhaps sit it aside for a few minutes to allow it to cool down. Of course, if you ever smoke a clay pipe, the bowls will tend to get hot by the very nature of the pipe material (think of a ceramic heater) and often you will find that you need to hold them by the stem and not by the bowl. ::
slow it down a bit. Try packing a little lighter as well. Put your pipe to your cheek to see if its too hot. If it burns your face then slow it down. Good luck and welcome
I tend to smoke hot OR I have some pipes that just seem to want to smoke hot....Pack 2 bowls. If one pipe gets too hot, smoke the other pipe. If the pipe doesn't get too hot...just smoke and enjoy
]Welcome! Good choice on the Stanwell and Melange as others have slow down and definitely pick up a few cobs and you can perfect your technique without having to worry about the pipe. Welcome aboard and enjoy. :puffpipe:
