My next evolution in the hobby: Smoking cool.

OK so, up until recently (the draft hole burn incident) I thought I was keep my pipes pretty cool. Once that happened I did some reading (here and other places) and realized that I'm NOT! So, per Russ' article on the front page I've been re-evaluating my packing method.
Last night I tried the method described by Mr. McGrane of J.J. Fox (which has been posted previously) Packing video
WOW. It made a huge difference in the temperature of the pipe! I feel like I've learned something good here!

OK, that's totally different from my 'put a bunch in and crush it down some' method. I know what I'm trying tonight. I'm still new to the art and appreciation of this. However, I am totally enjoying the ride so far. Thank you for this.

Been a piper for many a year. Never saw that done before. I just have to give that one a try. I'll probably goof it up the first five or ten tries but what the hey.

The consensus is it's called the "Harry Method". It works best with ribbon cut tobaccos and billiard type pipes. It's fun to do around people because they look and go WTF? The hardest part is to learn to not make a mess when you do it. Still haven't mastered that part yet.

Just gave it a go and it worked. At the very least it taught me a couple of things about the proper amount of tightness I need to achieve when loading up a bowl.

Its the method i use. On some of my bent pipes i have to take the stem off to accomplish it.

I agree with baronsamedi, best tried with billiard, Canadians, pots etc. I've had quite good results with it.

Just tried his method, It works Great, cool and very few re-lights.

Another success story. I have some bagged samples and just left it in the bag and placed the bag flat in the palm of my hand. Probably the best smoke I've had. Cool, burned evenly and fewer relights.

Let me add, that if you haven't tried this method of packing your pipe, you really owe it to yourself to try it. I think it's genius.

I use a modified version of this that doesn't make near the mess. I keep the pipe upright and use three fingers and a thumb and lightly roll the tobacco in. I then tamp that down and repeat a second time. Lastly I drop in some finer ground tobacco and lightly tamp then light. I get a nice even burn with very few if any relights and a cool smoke.
