Yours is rusticated. Every carver has their own techniques for rusticating a pipe, but basically, it involves using tools to gouge out small pieces of briar. Sandblasted pipes are done by putting the pipe in a sealed cabinet that has flexible sleeves built into the side of it. The carver puts his arms in the sleeves and uses high pressure air to bombard the pipe with sand or glass beads. The sand erodes the softer parts of the wood while leaving the harder growth rings and grain patterns to stand out from the surface.
